I can speak from experience here having used both types...I would go with a quality usb one, its just easier, works flawless, and a cheap way to get a dual band adapter. Going through 3 walls and maybe 40feet away from the router both methods gave me full reception. I wrote a little review thats linked under my avatar, but It was the asus usb-n53 which I got on sale at frys maybe a year ago, they are still much cheaper than newegg too, link below.

Trust me that little guy can do it all, from large downloads to bf3 gaming with low latency. NEVER had an issue with it, I used it mostly on a cable internet connection at 29Mbps/1.5Mbps, but when I moved and got fios I used it just to test and it got the full 75Mbps/35Mbps I pay for, I just dont use it since I can go LAN now.

I also had good luck with the Dlink pci-e extreme wireless adapter but dont see it on newegg anymore. I had to remove it when I went matx and had a 3slot asus gpu with a sound card too.

Edit:
I want to add that even though it wasnt needed, I used a usb extension cord of about 4ft in length to keep the adapter on the desk with no performance issues at all with the adapter and latency. USB 2.0 has plenty of bandwidth so If they have 3.0 versions, its not needed. The only reason I would use the extension was becuase 5ghz seems to not like going through that many walls, I would have one bar less without the cord and the desktop pc mounted low under the desk. Forgot the router I had off the top of my head but it was a mid-high grade router, fios makes you use their own so i gave it to my uncle.
