Reboot problem

Thread Starter
Hi,

I have this computer since summer 2012. Two days ago, it started rebooting randomly. At first, it was restarting when I was on windows, but now it's even restarting on the bios setup. I have tried to do a memtest with a usb linux live, but it crashed without finishing a single try. What can I do to learn what component is broken?

Edit:

Thanks in advance for your help,

I would strip it down to the bare essentials. CPU/ heatsink, mobo, PSU, one stick of RAM in the first slot (reseat it), no disks or other peripherals except keyboard. You can do this in the case unless it fails this basic test then you need to flatten it out on a table (pull all parts out of the case) and test again on a non-conductive surface (not the antistatic bag) or anything with a foil printing on it. Your PSU might be acting wonky just as a first guess or maybe RAM timings. X58's are very temperamental on the RAM side of things. Inspect the mobo for any damaged/ smoked components or bulged out capacitors. Try and see if it will boot up and if it makes it to the BIOS screen let it sit there for awhile to see if it will crash. Listen to the PSU for any electrical whine or other weird noises and check for the fan operation and cleanliness. If you hear whine noises then the PSU is going out and needs to be replaced. If it seems stable start adding stuff back into it one at a time and retest until it crashes again.

So I tried with another PCU, another graphical card, and without my SSD and both hard-drive, but the PC was still rebooting. I also tried using both stick of RAM separately, but the problem remain.

I am starting to suspect my motherboard, but I didn't see any burn mark or bulged out capacitors.

Any advice before I contact the motherboard company?

try to pull out all your ram sticks. and see what it does? ,also this is just one possibility. Random reboots can also be caused by bad motherboards, glitchy video-card drivers, and other hard-to-troubleshoot items.

Also check temps it could be a heat issue, second power supply but since you tried another one it doesnt seems to be the problem of the PSU.

third : try it in safemode and see if its restarting.

If I pull out all the RAM sticks a red light appear on the mother board and nothing print on the screen. I don't think a glitchy video-card drivers is the problem because I also try with a different video-card with the same result. Finally, it restarts in safemode and also in the bios setup.

Thank you for your advice
