ASUS Rampage IV Extreme or CPU Fried?

I think my RIVE has died.

about a week ago, I was folding and had a couple crashes. They where the type where the system just powered off. temps on the chip where mid to high 70's. I happened a few times. I had prime tested my ocz...

Then it started happening not under load.

e.g. I'd be browsing or very low load actively and ti would just power off - No BOSD message.

I could restart for a while after this and thought it was my PSU (it was bought in 2009)...

I replaced the PSU and did some retubing on my gpu's loop ...

now the PC won't start unless it is powered off for like hours.

Once it does start it boots, post, i get to windows ... then the same power off issue happens again...

I plan to send the mobo back to ASUS --- but just wondering if others have had this happen and any thoughts on a solve ... I've doen all the typical troubleshooting one ram/gpu no peripherals, cmos cleared, jumper pulled ...

I don't have anything to test with on a 2011 socket..

what's the consensus

Motherboard or CPU Fried?

Gut says Motherboard.

Because you can get into Windows for a bit and then a shutdown happens. Bad cpu, you wouldn't get into windows.

I had my cpu died on me and my system would post 30% of the time. When it did, it would get to the loading of windows, then bsod.

Got a new cpu and all is well. 3970x and RIVE.

Still happening. I plan to RMA the board tomorrow.... wish me luck.

any one have thoughts on if it is the chip versus the board?

would a damaged chip be able to fire up and them make the pc power down?

Well last night I think same thing happened to me! Did same thing. Rebooted a few times and now nothing. It turns on the off in like 1/10th of a second. Then like every 2-5 seconds does the same thing until I turn off the power. It will not post at all now. Did you ever get yours fixed? If so what was the issue?
