Well, I was also thinking about buying one of those two processors. I have come to a conclusion, that the haswell is crap, because it brings no improvements for a desktop over an ivy. Also, a good mobo + haswell i5 costs a 120 bucks more than a good am3+ mobo with a FX8350 where I live. Does haswell offer 120$ worth improvement for me? No. In CPU bound single threaded games where an i5 puts 140 fps vs FX8350s 110fps, I don't really care because 110fps is already more than playable. All the new high end games like Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 utilize 8 cores.
Also, people have been mentioning many times that new consoles will push the game developers to make use of more cores and believe me, they will. More than a half of the PC games are console ports that are pushing an xbox360 to the limits, that has only 3 cores. Imagine what the game devs can do with 8 cores.
If the difference in price between the 4670k and the FX8350 was not so significant, I would grab the 4670k. Ether way, you can't go wrong with any of those cpus.
I'll save 160$ and grab the FX8320 which I will overclock.
this sums all this up....

choosing-a-gaming-cpu

A CPU for Dual GPU Gaming: i5-2500K or FX-8350
A CPU for Quad-GPU Gaming: i7-3770K with a PLX motherboard
A CPU for Tri-GPU Gaming: i7-3770K with an x8/x4/x4 (AMD) or PLX (NVIDIA) motherboard

As you can see the AMD falls sort after regular SLi or CF-X..

50% performance in everything 4 threaded or less IS MASSIVE a good 15 = 30% " "i7s" in multi threaded is also Massive.. While using less power while bringing better options to the table it is huge.

I woulden't touch an amd processor for a gamer / day to day system with a 10 foot poll...

Onlything there good for IMO is to support a Budget folding rig.... Or running Linux which seems to like them.

And no im no fan boi im just well read and not stupid and own 14 AMD gpus which perform well.. where the Amd cpus are just turds.

Just check HWbot it tells the whole story.

You can also add more gpus to make a crappy gpu better.. However your cpu what you get your stuck with.

People who go cheap on there cpu but spend 1200$ + on gpus drive me nuts...

yes the AMD FX 8350 does lose a bit of performance past dual gpu's but that market is very slim anyways but all in all the 8350 does perform very well and in very acceptable ranges on all recent games it remains in the very playable fps with a descent GPU period that i believe is what OP wanted to know but be aware there are ways to get better performance from the AMD FX 8350 when running multiple GPU's first thing is full 1866mhz ram@1t makes a huge difference with the 8350 and also bumping NB to 2400-2600 mhz then simply upping the 8350 to around 4.8ghz x8 and alot of the issues are resolved that is what i did to drop my performance loss from around 13% over Intel in games like far cry 3 / metro 2033 / crysis 2&3 by doing this i took a loss of around 7% total running trifire hd 7970's and yes i had a I7 3770k@ 4.6ghz rig with exact same GPU's and GPU clocks so truth is there is not much of a bottlekneck with AMD FX 8350 if you know how to set them up and overclock them to theyre full potential yes they are a bit trickier than Intel but that is half the fun.

Intel is simply up multiplier / FSB and up voltage AMD you deal with manualy setting ram speeds in bios and also manualy setting to 1T / CR1 command rate and also NB overclocking and such lol.

for anyone saying NB overclocking is crap on AMD FX 8350 run multiple GPU's and mess with the NB it makes a pretty drastic performance increase i gained 10-15 fps by upping it from 2200mhz to 2400mhz and got a total increase of around 20-23 fps by going to 2600mhz which compansated alot of the loss running trifire hd 7970's on the AMD FX 8350 also i want to point out 2600mhz i never could get 100% stable but it was 80%-90% of time stable but 2400mhz i got 100% stable.

basicaly on above games i remained around 10-25 fps behind the Intel I7 3770k identical setup ( same ssd's same GPU's same resolution and monitors ) at 90% of the time i dont think that is to shabby some claim that upping the pcie frequency to around 105mhz-110mhz also makes a few FPS increase but i have not had the balls to attempt to do so lol.

all this was tested at 1920x1080 and 5760x1080 and also 2560x1600 and 7680x1600 i have 2x eyefinity setups one uses 2560x1600 screens other uses 1920x1080 screens.

Excuse after excuse.

No point arguing with that guy see high lighted screen shot.

The op seems smart enough not to fall for the BS... i just feel sorry for all the ones that do.

Amd cpu division is partially at fault for Intel not really needing to increase performance of there cpu's and focusing on other area's of the cpu..

Why jump huge amounts of performance when your already lapped 2nd place?

Lets just hope steam roller gets a more realistic ipc performance bump of 15 = 20% then intel may have a reason to give us a lil more performance with broadwell.

I want to point out my GPU's scale out to 96%-99% in trifire when at 2600mhz NB at 2400mhz i get 85%-95% across all three gpu's with AMD FX 8350 at 4.8ghz x8 and full 1866mhz ram@1t i use riva tuner OSD and HWinfo64 for my monitoring for OSD and i use sapphire trixx for my GPU overclocking and good old bios overclocking for my CPU / NB.

I also want to point out my main gaming machine is for just that gaming i dont web browse or anything on it i dont benchmark on it or anything pure dedicated gaming machine i have 4 other rigs here capable of any game out nearly maxxed out for that stuff that i web browse test hardware and such on.

trust me friends love coming here for lan parties and such and for the random visiting turned into hardcore gaming all nighters lol.

Thread Starter
The only thing I'mworried about is having eenough money for a haswell setup. I'm 16 on a tight budget and every time I get money it seems to be put back into my truck... My overall budget is $1150ish that includes monitor desktop and os. I'dlike to get a free os (I saw how to do it) but iI'm not that smart with computers, I couldn't even get mods to work on oblivion... But I can build one fine.

I forgot to mention, that I am building a single gpu PC. Otherwise, I wouldn't be so cheap about the cpu. I think that for a single gpu, FX-8350 is more than enough.
