Hey guys,

Just a little tip for anyone who is currently running an really old PC or has one laying around and wants to give their old workhorse some new life! The system used in this test was:

CPU: Pentium D 805 2.66Ghz 2MB Cache 533Mhz FSB
RAM: 1 x 1GB DDR2 533Mhz
HDD: 80GB SATA 7,200RPM
MoB: MSI Motherboard
PSU: SSF PSU & SFF CASE.
GPU: Onbuild Radeon X200.

Armed with a budget of £50 I set out to figure a way to kick start this badboy back to life! After some head scratching I ended up with the following upgrade items:

1) 32GB SSD Cache Drive = £32 (new)
2) 4GB DDR2 667Mhz Slim Transcend RAM = £22 (new)

Total = £54.

The one thing I do regret is not running a benchmark test before wiping the old drive to make a comparison afterwards but anyways. After installing the new bits I went ahead and reinstalled the OS. Now at first I realized it started like any OS would after a clean install, quick, slick and easy smooth. Nothing really wowed me, in fact, I noticed NO difference what so ever.

Where it began to shine however was after installing Firefox, Thunderbird, Fireworks, Skype etc and using these programs for a few days on and off. The new setup loaded them all up within seconds where as before Thunderbird would have taken a good minute to fully load. So the cache drive obviously needed a few start ups to learn what to cache etc.

Overall, I am chuffed with the results I've gained from this old workhorse. The system currently handles 720p youtube videos flawlessly (shudders with 1080p though.) I am seriously considering installing an SSF graphics card but I am a little worried about the generic PSU so for now, this is the way it stays.

Well there you have it folks, if you want to kick start some life out of you old PC on a seriously small budget or if you have family members with old systems and don't want to break the bank, buy an SSD cache drive and upgrade the RAM and you will pleasantly surprise them with their newly found PC experience. thumb.gif
