Upgrading my server cooling questions

Thread Starter
So i am upgrading my ESXI box from an Amd 965 over to a dual Xeon L5520 setup. The board i'm looking at is SUPERMICRO MBD-X8DAL-i-O Link

My issue is that ive been looking what cpu coolers to use and it dosent seem that i'm going to be able to use a standard 1366 cooler.

Was hoping you fine people would have some ideas / suggestions as what coolers i can use. Size dosent really matter. Id also considering changing out the board for something else as i can always get a new case if needed.

Thanks

Dual Xeon L5520s, eh? Why not just buy a used Dell C1100 from eBay? Dual Xeon L5520s, 72GB of RAM, 4 drive bays, around $400. You can't build anything near that. It's a 1U rackmount server, and a tad too noisey for a bedroom but not for an office/closet/basement/etc.

while that would be a nice path to go down it would especially be way to loud for the room mine sits in now. Ive already got the cpu's looking for a board and a way to cool them. Should be able to get it done for under $300.

I am definitely putting the C1100 on my wishlist though.

Yeah, it's not for everyone. I love mine and will be getting two more here soon. Powerful and cheap. Regardless, those L5520s are great CPUs for virtualization and don't drain much power.

Mine are in my home office. Even though they are 1U, they use PWM fans and are quieter than my storage box. The fans go 100% at power on, but quiet down over a 5 minute period. Check out this video I made:

Afraid I don't. Why can't you use a standard LGA1366 cooler?

Per the Newegg reviews, one reviewer posted that the Noctua NH-U9DX coolers worked well with this board and X5650s.

That should be more than enough to keep the L5520s cool.
