My memory predicament! 16GB corsair 1333 or 8GB gskill 2400mhz?

Thread Starter
OK so here's the deal. Currently I have 16GB of Corsair XMS3 1333MHz memory installed into my rig. I am running the 8350 with a mild OC 24/7 I am running the RAM at their stock speed, as I am somewhat unfamiliar with timings etc. I have on hand 8GB of G.Skill Trident X 2400MHz RAM. I am unsure whether or not I should be running the 16GB of Corsair or the 8GB of Gskill for best system performance. I do a lot of work in photoshop, web design and a lot of gaming. Which configuration would serve my system the best?

Why not both?

what kind of work do you do on photoshop? anything really high res?
because uness you are trying to apply filters to pictures around 10000x10000 pixels then i would just go with the g.skill ram. especially since games these days don't usually use more than 8 gigabytes of RAM.

log your ram usage for a few days, if it goes above 7.5GB, use the 16gb sticks

Have you tried the 2400mhz ram yet to see if it will run at those speeds? Some 8350 owners can get it to run and some cannot, I was unfortunate and could not get my tridents to run at 2400 mhz no matter what I tried.

Should've tried an Ivy Bridge CPU. tongue.gif

But yeah, 2400 on PD is asking a lot. You should be able to get the tridents running at 1866/2133 though. If you don't need the extra capacity give it a shot.

I'd definitely go with the G.Skill.

Check the memory frequency records on the bot >Ivy can not match the top scores for lllano or Vishera

I am running the Trident ram I believe it to be the same. It is running with a paired 8320. Dependent on the overclock is what speeds I let it run at. If just using multi to overclock then I leave the ram at stock. I have found out though with this chip and board which is 99 asrock x4 that base clock overclocking is way different. Any time I have done a base clock and I think the highest was at 265-270. The problem I ran into was that I had to match the N.bridge to the ram speeds or vice versa. If you don't be prepared to be in bsod city. biggrin.gif
