Common or Reoccuring themes/habits you have in your games? Unintentional or not?

Just a curious question, this is mostly directed at RPG/MMO players but this can refer to anything with a character creator, doesn't really matter...

But have you ever noticed any repeating/reoccurring/common themes or habits in your games? Like character archetype or something like that?
Ever noticed one that kept happening and you didn't realize it till later?

I have one that always puzzled me...
All of my MMORPG avatars are some type of blonde. I have no clue as to why I do this either, I'm a brunette in real life too.
I only noticed this after hitting 80 in Guild Wars 2, because I modeled my norn to look like a bit like blood elf(kinda), then I looked at all my mmo characters...
my amazon in Prius: White blonde (her Anima was golden blonde)
My avatar in Tales Runner: Orange Blonde
Archer in TERA: White blonde
Norn in GW2: Sunlight blonde
Fiona in Vindictus: Bleach Blonde
Blood Elf in WoW: Sunlight blonde
Archer in Eden Eternal: White blonde.

On and on. The only avatar that I have that isn't a blonde is my pandaren who has black hair with a purple streak.

Any of you guys got one of these little habits? or something that you do with your characters?

Not necessarily character creator similarities, but I have a tendency to go the sneaky/stealthy type in any game that has it, and if it doesn't I stick with long-range, hard-to-locate stealthiness. I tend to take the sniper/dmr role in shooters, the rogue/assassin role in MMOs/RPGs, a combo of the two in games like Fallout. For games that don't have a purpose built stealthy/sneaky class, I go ranged ala Archer/Ranger.

This is most likely due to being a career White Mage in FFXI and getting completely burnt out on healing/casting in general.

Typically with choice influenced games (good / evil) I like play as a stealthy do gooder and along the way remember all the annoying characters throughout the game and on my 2nd playthrough I enact some sweet maniacal justice as an evil head bashing, weapons blazing, annihilate everyone in my way villain. I typically enjoy being a villain over being a goodie goodie hero bound by hero standards. But with all games in general I like to explore every inch of the in game world, it's usually why I take longer than others to play through a game. Some people like to do speed runs, I like to explore every possible part of a game.

It's something I noticed a long time ago, but all my characters if given the choice are always female. Apparently; being of the male gender, that is strange.
I guess I'll never be apart of the "bro-force" /sarcastic sigh

As for personality and archetypes; I will always choose the stealthy type as well, and if there is alignment involved (looking at you D&D and Neverwinter Nights) I will always be Chaotic Evil.
If there is a mechanic for me to be a prick, I will utilize the hell out of it! tongue.gif

I have a little theory about that honestly.

I think if most people were given the choise of which gender they would want to be, I think video game choises show that most people would prefer to be female.
I don't blame the guys for making female characters, because male characters are...
"power fantasy" in video games. Not everyone likes that. But everyone likes a cute girl, everyone likes a nice girl that can be a bad ass.

Its just a dumb theory, but I think if people were given the option. I think there'd be a lot more women on earth.

Actually, in gaming it is quite the opposite from what I've seen.

The video game Remember Me almost got cancelled (or at least fundamentally altered) due to the publisher refusing to green light the game due to having a female protagonist.
Another prime example is Bioshock: Infinite. One of the most crucial characters of the entire game was removed from any box art or 'most' posters of the game due to the fact gamers reacted negatively to a woman being involved in their video game...

In fact. this a great watch on the entire piece: The Jimquisition: The Creepy Cull of Female Protagonists

I've seen that. but that's a form of sexism that we should tackle with knowledge. Because apparently gamers don't mind if the protagonist is male or female, it just has to be a good game. biggrin.gif
At least that's what I hope. I think there's a big problem with sexism amoung video games, and I've experienced some of that myself. Its not something I want to get into here in this thread. Maybe another time...

But there's been some incredible games with female main's in them.
Mirrors Edge(Faith), American McGee's Alice series(Alice), Xenosaga series(Shion and KOS-MOS, hell KOS MOS was the face of Xenosaga), Tomb Raider series(Laura Croft).

But one thing I've noticed is that so many male players in MMOs, and this is coming from a 9+year mmo veteran, have a main or at least one or 2 constantly played alts that are female.
I think its mostly due to comfort, and attraction.

Also if you look at Korean MMOs, vanity is a huge seller in those kinds of games. and its a lot easier to play "dress up" with girls because female clothing has always traditionally been so heavily variated and more of a choice of what to wear, not what should I wear.
Most male transmogs in wow ive seen are either jokes or "badass" things.
yet female transmogs usually gravitate towards hot or pretty but there are also people like me who go for "feminine badass" like my blood elf.

My norn(Guild Wars 2) wears the most "manly" outfit ive ever made for an avatar.
Blue Jeans, a rugged full coverage trench jacket, Combat boots.
Nothing revealing, fairly minimizing, she looks like rugged...tough..."one of the guys" kinda girl.

I dunno I just think out of preference most people chose female over male, for obvious and unobvious reasons.

I'm in agreement here. I don't care what sex the protagonist is as long as the game is fun. I loved Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite, I loved Mirror's Edge, I loved Alice in AMG's Alice (although arguably that couldn't be made with male on principle of the story but still). Tomb Raider without Lara would just be Uncharted. There are games that just seem better with a female lead.

I played the Mass Effect trilogy with a female Shepard, it felt better, somehow, more intense, more emotional when the important decisions came about. A male Shep just seemed... typical. I did the same with Dragon Age for the same reasons. MMOs it really depends on the class for me. My character in FFXI was female (Human, not Mithra btw), it felt right since I mained White Mage healing. I generally see healers as female, whether people consider that sexist or not shouldn't matter, it's just a normal perception, and apparently a lot of people feel the same as the majority of healers I've seen in over a decade of MMOs have been female characters.

I think it comes with the societal perception of women as weaker, that seeing a strong female lead can be a huge dividing factor for some reason. Some games, classes, characters, etc, just seem to fit better when they're female. Just my 2 cents.

And on that note, I will say that I have another habit though. When I do make a femal character, she's always a red head, if I have the option. I didn't in FFXI, which was sad for me, so she was brunette. My second choice.

EDIT: Just thought of another strong female lead. Kerrigan in StarCraft, the game wouldn't be the same without her.

I think there's a subconscious undertone in everybody's mind be it that theyre male or female that we're all sick of seeing women being "helpless and weak" Its done to death for the past few thousand years and we know that's a crock of crap.
I mean nowadays, women are so common in the work force that the idea of "housewife" just...is so rare.
I think with the influx of female gamers, the commonly overdone "sex symbol" characters, and the gripes of guys/men no longer wanting to be treated as if they are only to be pandered too for their money.
I think a lot of us are fed up with all the garbage and we want something more real.
Realism has been such a serious direction gaming has been moving towards. I think its only expected that were getting sick of the bullcrap fantasies being in EVERY GAME.
Well I think this is true for games, but in society. I'm not sure how people perceive it. I'm biased to be pro "strong women" and "sex/gender equality" and stuff like that. I don't know why anyone would be against it, but that's how I see it.

The problem with equality is that it will never be truly equal, and it's factors from both sides. Most guys put women up on pedestals, inherently not seeing them as equal, others see them as lower. And the same thing happens on the other side, a lot of women want special treatment simply because they're female, or they're rich, or they're pretty. There's too many things on both sides of that fence for it to ever be truly equal.

I'm all for equality, but only if it's TRUE equality, same pay, same jobs, same amount of work required, same restrictions, same physical requirements. I say let women be on the front lines if they want to be, but make the PFA/PFT stuff the same, no special pushups, no slower 1.5mile time, no fewer pullups, etc etc. Equality should be just that, EQUAL. But our society here in the States just simply won't allow for it, let alone other cultures. So for now we have to only see it in the media.

An example of a terrible female lead, at least to me, was the main character in Revolution (I quit watching halfway through the season because of her). The writers made her whiny, unreliable, and foolhardy. She'd screw everything up every episode, and then cry about it to win sympathy. That's been the stereotypical archetype for decades, and it's just annoying now. I'd have probably kept watching if she'd been a better character, but that's just one example of how that perception is still around.
