The a6 3650 is fairly slow for games, especially for single core performance (in comparison to the 3570k)
Honestly don't even worry about "if it's worth it" just jump for it and go because you will notice quite a bit in games.

Not sure on their pricing at MC, but I'd suggest a Gigabyte Z77x-D3H or a Z77x-UD3H (the latter being better marginally).
You're right in thinking Haswell won't be on sale for a while, that and it's not a massive performance increase really (from a 3570k).
There wont be an 8950/8970 AMD is using 8xxx series for laptop graphics i believe and they are jumping to 9xxx for Desktop graphics xd.
You should see a large performance increase with an i5 upgrade, make sure you get an ssd though that is the single most noticeable upgrade in my opinion.

looks like the 3570k is about a 90% increase over your current CPU

I'd suggest an SSD too if you can afford that, or get one later on. The i5 for sure though! smile.gif

I've got a 60gb agility 3... that will be my next upgrade though. It's too small to fit much but the OS. It will have to work till my funds build up again. wink.gif

I was thinking of upgrading to a 3570k(since micro center has them for a good price). How much faster will this cpu be than my current setup?
I use it mostly for everyday tasks with a few hours of gaming a week. I realize haswell is coming out soon but I wanted to pickup this cpu while it was still on sale(if its worth the upgrade). I don't think MC will discount haswell for a few months.

ya last summer I changed from a 1090tx6--crosshair V,,to a,, 3570k-z77,,,i was very happy with the performance increase,,,,using the same memory and gpu,,,everything,,,,gta 4 was a huge jump in performance,,i gained FPS in all my games,,the 3570k is very easy to overclock,,mine has been at 4.4ghz 24/7 for almost a year,,,,i would get a decent cooler..like a 212 evo,,or better

you wont be disappointed,,,if you can afford it,,go for it

Picked it up and have it all installed and up and running with a fresh copy of win 7. It's definitely a lot faster. Now the question is whether I OC it or not. biggrin.gif I did notice that after sitting idle for a while it seems to go in some sort of power savings mode where it barely uses any power(it was only pulling 4 watts on my killawat meter). What is this?

Intel is magnitudes ahead of amd, hence why they can and do charge a premium for it.

without getting into what gives more per dollar, performance only, intel's upper tier procs nothing compares. consumer grade anyhow.

Whats the max safe temp range for this chip? I'm seeing 60-62 after 2 hours of prime95 100% load with stock settings. I'm using an old xigmatek s183(I think that's the model #) and some AS5.

Nevermind about the power savings mode, I have my killawatt plugged into the wrong thing.

I guessed so about the power savings mode.. haha

It's pretty safe to run them up to 75c generally, you may want to try re-mounting the cooler though! smile.gif

I'm running a 64GB SSD and I have heaps of space with Windows 7 x64, Office 2010 and stuff like ccleaner, 7-Zip etc on there. Like 15GB+ free. Have you read thiis? The main thing that takes space is the hibernation.sys file. You can remove it because I don't think anyone that has an SSD will ever want to hibernate.. like ever.
