I really don't get it, what is so great about having a Mac? - Page 6

It's really just another way to do things. I switched because I'm an editor, but i love it. I'd never go back to Windows again. No more stupid problems, no codec errors, no trouble shooting, everything works the way I want it to. The only real reason I'd advise spending the money for a Mac is if you're tired of dealing with problems on Windows. I love that everything is a simple consumer setup, but someone coming from Linux can use the same power user features. And most of the command lines in Linux work in OS X so I didn't have to learn new ones. Try borrowing one from a friend or buy a cheap old one from Craigslist and try it out.

It takes a few days to get used to how things work. It's completely different, but there seems to be much more logic behind placement and design.

Here are my 2 cents on this matter.

I myself am an ACMT (Apple Certified Macintosh Technician) and as such, work on Macs on a daily basis. There are 2 things I can say:

Most common issue I see is a hard drive failure (expected)
Second most common would be user inflicted damage (spill, drop, broken glass, etc).

Personally, from what I can see as a repair tech, Macs are very reliable and Apple uses quality parts inside their machines. Those top cases (part with the keyboard) you see on macs? They are milled from a single piece of aluminum. Hands down, verse most other PCs on the market, Macs are probably one of the most reliable machines you could have.

Second thing I personally like is its simplicity when it comes to overall repair. But that is just me. You pay an arm and a leg for one, but they are very well built machines and most of them last a long time (still have my Macbook pro early 2008 here). Plus, you get the added bonus of a rock stable OS that USUALLY behaves itself. Occasionally there are software issues I got to fix, but most of the time it is rather straight forward.

I work closely alongside a PC tech... and the number of machines he gets is sad. Most of the time they are either removing viruses, fixing windows in some fashion, or replacing a hard drive.

Plus, if you have apple care (or even not) you got some great support. Apple offers us AASPs great support and Apple Care is really helpful when needed.

Now the Apple Store on the other hand... I would say is a hit and miss at times, but for the most part are rather helpful.

yeah but, those viruses are usually pebkac from when they click the fake download buttons in ads, that's why i pimp out ABP with chrome and firefox so much. the other thing is mac isn't impervious we know that with the past few vulnerabilities they justn't don't have AS BIG of a market share as windows and so people dont' really bother with malware for it.

that made it all that much funnier when i customer came with virus and malware on their mac, it was even funnier because it had windows style windows (luna visual style) poping up all over the screen.

Actually, most viruses come from drive by downloads from sites that have been infected. A large majority of our customer base (for the most part) know not to click on adds.

that is true too. I would like to say i was once told by a web admin how his ad agency approved an ad with pretty nasty virus. it just happened to be a web site my brother used. he went to the site on lunch break at work, and the virus in the ad took down the whole network.

that said my view point on macs probably is skewed since my view point is form hackintosh, windows and linux. i really don't dislike any of them, how ever windows is still my go OS for gaming and program compatibility. Mac and Linux are getting their however Mac got me pretty POed when i found out they pulled Rosetta for no good reason.

that is one thing i noticed that not many mac users have, at least the ones who don't play sctarcraft. Apple just expects developers to up and recompile/program old apps/games because they decided to pull Rosetta for no good reason.

i used to be the main admin at my campus, and worked with both as well. People still bringing the argument of virus on pc only its quite sad really, and hard drive failure? its about the same for both.

to summarize arguments and my own opinions:

apple:
-build quality good
-customer support is top notch
-software easy to use/os hard to kill system ( retard proof, no offense to anyone you all know what i mean )

cons:
-cost
-propitiatory parts and components ( unless apple, you can not use )

thus:
apple good for:
-people who have no clue how to use computers
-people who do not want to customize/personalize/get their hands on their own machines
-people who don't want to deal with fixing stuff on their own/etc
-do not care for price

P.S- just about the majority of laptops/desktops use a lot better parts than in the old days, apple does not really have any kind of advantage on design/battery life/cooldown system. I can purchase same system for pc with same build quality, same cooling, same or more battery life and spend a lot less.

Unless you REALLY need to use mac os only applications ( I.e: design/video/audio ) there really is little advantage to apple, heck even windows is getting easy mode also so its not really that different in general. As time goes on it gets less and less beneficial.

i recommend you save your money and look elsewhere unless like explained by others you "really" need to use mac os only apps/etc.

o and by the way to any nay Sayers, i have never gotten a single virus through my entire computing history, and even others who have no clue what to do a simple internet security software takes care of anything. My clueless family members who are extremely computer illiterate can attest to this lol.

You lose out on your boot screen though

Viruses are probably the biggest problem with windows, though after being a PC gamer for years and not once getting a virus while only using things like AVG and now MSE as my main AV programs. The best way to avoid them is setting up your web browsers with good add-ons to block adware/viruses.

You don't "get it"? It's pretty simple; some people like OS X, so in order to use it they need to buy a Mac. Maybe they like how OS X looks, maybe they like that it appears easier to use, maybe they like that Apple curates the hardware and software so they don't have to worry about things like driver updates. It could be any number of reasons, but it doesn't affect you so why worry about it?

Some people like to use Linux, I personally don't; I find it difficult to use, and I really really don't care to have to Terminal my way around for things, so I choose to avoid it. Someone could easily tell me that that's the reason they use Linux and not Windows, and they could ask the same question you are.

I will never understand questions like this. Different strokes for different folks, this should not be a difficult concept to grasp.
