SSD + HDD for CGI Workstation Question

Thread Starter
I currently run my signature rig with a WD 1TB drive as the C drive. I want to upgrade and put an SSD in there as a boot drive with maybe some of my more regularly used programs on the SSD.

I'm hoping that Windows 7+Maya+Mudbox+Photoshop+After Effects will fit onto a 64gb SSD.

My 3 questions are:

1- Will I be able to launch the software that is currently installed on my WD drive once it has been relegated to a secondary drive?
2- Will 64gb be enough for all the above pieces of software?
3- Is it a good idea to use a 2nd drive to install other software/games in the first place?

I have heard it can be difficult to install some Steam games to a 2nd drive, as I'd want to keep the Steam games I already have installed on the WD drive where they are, hoping that they operate like they do now just on a different drive (I imagine that saves and updates etc are going to be looking for the C drive when it comes to it?).

When I switched from Mac to PC, I spent a lot of time trying to learn about the hardware, but I'm not overly familiar with Windows, hence my daft questions.

1) you'll have to install everything from scratch
2) when you install windows have only the SSD connected; if you have the HD connected and if disconnect it later windows can get flonky, it screws up the Master Boot Record.
3) the space will be tight. since you already have the drive you may want to use it as a cache drive:
SSD Caching
it may not be as fast as running an OS and programs from an SSD but will will vastly improve boot/start up times and save A LOT of headaches trying to micromanage programs/files.

The cache option is pretty sweet though that micro management goes a long way .. If you can opt for a little bit larger drive if at all possible. Then you can use your larger drive to store all files and inch.. Also you ca.n if you have enough memory use RAM disk and use that to do photoshop caches and scratch disks there speeds it up along with your other editor software.

This is what I do and works a charm ( lr4 and lrt with premiere)

As for the steam games you'll prob have to reinstall the games I am not sure as I do not have a ton of games to begin with I just save all the game maps (dods) and other custom files for the server I'm a member of blitzkrieg whores (shakira;Blitz)

As for that portion I can't really help much

By chance what ssd 's have you been looking at?

Samsung 840 120gb, best value I can find (~£70) and people seem to rave about them quite a bit. Won't be getting the 840 pro, I don't think I can budget that much for minimal returns.

Any suggestions would be appreciated smile.gif

But I think I will probably do a completely fresh install on the SSD, but leave Windows on my HDD just incase anything goes wrong and delete it when everything looks fine.

Yup backups , important smile.gif

Very reliable drives samsungs are
You really go for any of the big names and you'll have a smile on your face..
Now if your really but picky and really notice the ms in reads and writes
Then go pro
But most don't
Crucial drives are very popular the m4 series
I have Kingston

It's really down to what you'll feel comfortable with
Mush kin drives , corsair drives, ocz drives, intel
All are very reputable
Kingston Sam disk plextor
Man all adds are pretty good it's just what is your price range and size you would like to have

Thanks smile.gif

It'll be more than a year in total, but my PC should finally be 'complete' sometime soon, haha smile.gif

Edit: Worst offender in my build is my PSU. Not a bad psu, it was recommended to me on a different forum, but its just an ugly green non-modular psu with nasty un-braided cables (not cheap either).
