Overclocking GIGABYTE 7950

Thread Starter
I'm a complete beginner when it comes to overclocking GPUs. I have a Gigabyte Windforce 3 7950, default clocks are 1000/1250. I believe it's voltage locked. BIOS version is 015.026.000.000.000000. The voltage at idle is 0.950 and goes to 1.125 when I'm playing games.

Looking for the best guide / info on what to do to get the best out of my card and overclocking it as well as stress testing it.

IN AMD Catalyst go to Overdrive and then adjust power settings to +20%. The two settings you can overclock are memory and Core. Memory matyter less in terms of overall performance.

Furmark or Kombuster or Unigine Heaven are what I use to test an overclock. Also just running a favourite game for a hour or two.

To overclock I generally start with core and see how far I can go berfore it artefacts/crashes. Artefacts are like when the screen goes strange colours, or lines or blocky pixels appear in game. When you find you max for that then drop it back 10 - 15 MHz and see if its stable.

After finding your MAx stable Core then put to the default and start with overclocking your memory. I find when I go too far on memory thge AMD driver crashes or the GPU locks up.

Once you've established you max for Core and Memory then you can try them together. You may find that together it is still unstable as it puts a lot of stress on the GPU. Just adjust the memory back a bit until stable again.

Anyone help me try and figure out a ballpark voltage and core/memory clocks? What do I need to aim for to match a 7970?

I am running 1.225v for a rock solid stable 1200mhz on core and default voltage for 1600mhz on memory. I have not messed around too much with my memory as it seems to be just fine at 1600.

Hope that helps for a ballpark figure.

Also always remember to have +20% power limit when overclocking.

I use the MSI AB auto fan speed (I don't remember if I edited it or not) and my max temp is something like 73-74C.
