Is built in wifi on the motherboard worth it, or would USB be a better option?

Built in Wifi IMO is better. They usually come with better Aerials. I have found USB Stick type wifi to be not that satisfactory in its overall performance.

Built in WIFI is better but may or may not add DPC latency, depending on the board. If you have to pay $100+ to get a MB just because it has Wifi, I would stick with a cheaper MB and buy a PCI Wifi Adapter instead.
