Tri SLI on FCAT?

Thread Starter
We used to say that going from 2-way SLI/CF to 3-way SLI/CF helps with the microstutter but has it actually been proved with nvidia's new software FCAT? We've seen a lot of graphs where nvidia's 2 way sli is much better than AMD's CF but to my knowledge, there hasn't been any comparisons of something like 2 way 680 SLI vs 3 way 680 SLI. Nowadays, with the way games not really scaling much past 2x sli, there's really not much reason to go for the third card, unless some measurable increase in performance can be seen, ie elimination of microstutter or significantly more fps.

I can say for sure that going from normal two card 7950 crossfire to tri-fire didn't help microstutter. I've heard other people report the same.

Also sli, at least with Kepler doesn't seem to suffer from microstutter very often. I've been using sli for a couple of months now and have yet to have needed to use a framerate cap.

Also, tri-fire and tri-sli scale very well if you take advantage of the hardware. I use SSAA whenever possible. Here is a good scaling comparison with the types of settings that I would actually use when possible.

I've got a 3960X @ 4.8. I've got two GTX 780's on the Rampage IV Extreme and its bothering me that I have to use the first and third slot. Debating if I want to go for the third now to make it look more balanced. Looking at the Titan 3 way SLI, in many cases, they actually lost FPS when going from 2 to 3, so I'm trying to see if there is really any improvement going from 2 to 3, no matter how small.

EDIT: There was one a lot of the reviews that I've seen have done a piss poor job reviewing the capability of the 3 way titans. I've seen one site use a 3820 and most of the sites don't push it past 2x AA.

Here's a good game that actually uses the third GPU. 2560x1600 @ 4x MSAA

Thus here's the next consideration, @ 4k resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 pixels, you're pushing about 8.2 megapixels, that's more than 5760x1080 surround which is about 6.2 megapixels.
We've seen the Titans cope fairly well with 1080p surround but at only 3GB of vram, how will the GTX 780 do at those kinds of resolutions. I would imagine you're probably not able to bring out the full potential of the card at those kinds of resolutions.

The op in that thread is using an i7 2700k at at least 5ghz iirc.

But yes most benchmarks will run into cpu limits at normal resolutions which skews peoples opinions on tri-sli and tri-fire scaling. I like to use SSAA or transparency aa which puts quite the load on your gpus. Thats when tri-sli/tri-fire will scale linearly.

Just look at the thread that I linked to, those are the types of settings that he was using.

Yes, in games that are cpu limited adding a third video card is only going to put more of a load on the cpu which will result in lower framerates.

If you check techpowerup's tri-fire review it shows negative scaling for 7970 tri-fire in Borderlands 2. Who the heck needs three cards in that game for the default settings? SSAA works great in that game and has since launch. It makes the game look much better. When using that tri-fire scales great.

IMO, you're wasting your money if you're using three cards to play at typical settings.

I wouldn't worry about it now. There aren't any affordable 4k displays on the market that run at a reasonable refresh rate. By the time that there is most GTX780 owners will have upgraded anyways.
