Since the OP has a 7870, I think he'll be fine.

Most other people around here run Skyrim with more or less the same graphics mods (maybe a few less texture mods), but they use ENB instead of RCRN. ENB might be what pushes people past the 2GB limit, since it improves shadows and adds DOF. I can't confirm this though.

Shadows looked like crap with or without ENB. For example, even at a medium draw distance, I could play count-the-pixels on any random tree shadows. What is that moving? Looks like 8-Bit Mario jumping in the air.... And no, I'm not even trolling, I'm dead serious.

The only way to get rid of the blocky shadows was to lower the draw distance, to the point where you could see a radius around you where the shadow render distance cut off, and it was hard to determine what looked worse, 8 bit Mario, or a short cut-off distance for the shadows.....

Not to mention a lot of rocks had shadows on the side glitched into racing stripes or checker board patterns. Looked absolutely horrendous.

I tried all the .ini file modifications I could find on internet forums for shadows, and wasn't pleased with any of them.

I felt like the shadows in Skyrim only served the purpose of beating the textures of the game down with an ugly stick. Like a girl with a pretty face who smiles but has missing/mangled teeth.

Yeah shadows in Skyrim are poorly done like that. You can make closer ones look good by lowering the shadow draw distance, but you can't get a good balance at all. No matter what, most of your shadows will look like crap. mad.gif

Yea... has to do with the mods you chose, not that "modded skyrim looks like crap" as you say.

What dude no way. I installed HD2K and a couple of other mods and the difference is night and day. After that I could never ever EVER go back to vanilla (not even counting the gameplay/other mods).

I see you installed the offical HD and HD2k. Use only HD2k, it's much better.

Well I installed HD2k OVER the official HD DLC. So that should make it better, not any worse.

I followed another guide, and I'll update the OP with my new mods and screens.
