Belial's Comprehensive Guide to 7950s! - Page 30

There's no suddenly, I've used one before and now I have my own to play with. I've messed with a bunch of 7950s, as I've made clear in this thread since the beginning (back when I hadn't played with too many).

I believe the 90C temps occurred from setting the voltage to 1.25v. Even though the card is voltage locked, by changing the voltage settings the card was getting extra voltage and power, thus getting hotter, but the chip logic itself doesn't get the voltage. I've seen this on other voltage locked 7950s as well. I had just set 1.25v to try and hadn't changed it back. So hitting 85C+ on an Asus is definitely going to happen on 1.2v+.

With 1030mhz@1.09v stock voltage, 100% fans, +50 power limit, the card hit 58*C:

In a 10C room, with a +13 delta that's 71*C with 100% fans. That's in an open case with 4x140mm high fans blowing directly on it too, I find a side panel adds a little more than 10C to GPU temps.

Like I've said, the asus is far and beyond the other 7950 coolers, it's just still inadequate. I'm not even sure what your argument is, running an asus 7950 on a low 1.09v means you can keep it under 70C as long as you run 100% fan speed? Gee, what a cool card rolleyes.gif

I am looking for an aftermarket cooler for my Sapphire 7950 Dual-X (Boost Ed.). I was looking into the Arctic Accelero Hybrid. Should it be compatible with my GPU? Thanks
Also, any advice on a CPU cooler to that i can tie with zips to the GPU?

I used a 120mm case fan once on my HIS hd6790 when the stock fan crapped out, I just took off the plastic shroud and zip tied it on, powered by the mobo. It didn't look very pretty but it sure did stay cool. I eventually bought a gelid solutions vga cooler, it worked a hair better than stock and I just went back to the stock heatsink and 120mm fan.

It's way overpriced. Just get any asetek CLC and you can mount it after drilling 4 holes in the intel mount (or even into the amd mount).

You can mount any of the CLCs with zipties but I'd recommend against it since it's so random if it works. You really should either use the intel mount, buy one of the artisan mounts like dwood bracket or kepler dynamcs or that universal one, OR buy the new nzxt bracket. It's only $29 which is a good price, especially since it comes with a 92mm fan and it's got an aesthetic going for it.

I'd recommend a 92mm fan over a 120mm. A lot of the airflow will get lost on a 120, so after all is said and done, a 92mm at 4x the RPM cools better.

Thanks for the answer. Could a Corsair H55 be ok to get good temps? Also, i've read bad things about the cooling of VRM of the Kraken G10. Since i'm going to use that card to do gpu mining (not all day everyday, but around 4-5 hours per day) i would like the VRM to stay cool too. What would you suggest me to do, then? Still buying a Corsair H55 and the Kraken G10, or maybe looking into an air cooler like the Prolimatech MK-26?
BTW, my card has a non reference PCB, it's similar but it's not the same from the reference one:
This is my gpu
This is the reference one
Does this change something with the compatibility of the Kraken and of the Prolimatech? Thanks a lot.

A 120mm was all I had onhand at the time and with a custom cardboard baffle redirecting airflow almost none was wasted. but i agree that a 92mm fan would probably be better suited ... or two 92mm fans.

Hi Belial,

I have a Windforce 7950 with 7970 PCB that came with a Z1 bios at 1000mhz stock which was locked to 1.25v and made my card both unstable and throttle, so since my card seems to be voltage locked ( tried with trixx afterburner asus and gigabyte oc tools but none of them lets me change the voltage ) I decided to mod a FY1 bios which allowed me to set the voltage to one of the presets available, I set mine to 1.16v and the card now is stable up to 1120mhz, while if I set it to 1.25 on FY1 I can only reach 1150 without errors in occt and BF3 crashing, for this reasons I settled with 1120mhz. The real problem is that I can't manage to OC the memory at all, as soon as I go beyond 1300mhz I begin to get artifacts, red and grey thin lines in a grid shape, I checked the memory type using the memory tool you posted and this is the result I got

is my memory bad or do I need to tweak something to make it stable?

Kraken doesn't come with VRm sinks. VRM sinks do more then a fan on the VRM will. So it's not really the fault of the kraken, you just need to make sure you have sinks on the VRM. Also, low quality mosfets will run hot even with a lot of cooling on them, ie xfx dd.

Corsair h55 is just another clc. At $20-40 it's fine, anything more it's not fine. I'd expect to pay $25-35 for it.

As for the prolimatech vs clc, get what's the best performance/dollar for you. PCB doesn't affect mounting of CLC to GPUs.

If you're card is unstable at stock, look into it being faulty (though heat can cause instability and you can overheat on a 'stock' 1.25v easily).

You can edit your voltage with FY1? Or do you mean it allowed you to go to 1.16v, the stock voltage of FY1? I have FZ0, i cant change it, seems no one with Fz0 can (besides dropping it by going to certain official bios), but I want to raise mine to 1.3v+.

What are your temps hitting? Cards can lose stability at higher temps. You really can't do 1.25v unless you're on water.

Is your memory voltage being changed? If it's been on stock, try raising it to up to 1.65v. See what happens. I'm surprised by your results.

It was unstable at stock because of the heat, it turned my case into an oven before I changed the bios. I used this with the FY1 as base to change the core voltage, normally you can set any voltage you want but in the first tab of the vbe7 software the vrm module is detected as unknown so instead of letting you write the number you want it gives you a drop down menu with 4 or 5 voltages to choose from, as I wrote I cannot change voltages using OC tools like afterburner. My card now while playing Battlefield 3 doesn't go above 75°C and it tops out at 82°C with furmark after about 20 minutes of stress testing, the VRM must be a bit hotter if I hover my hand over the VRM I can feel a lot of heat rising while the rest of my card is way cooler, I tried with various monitoring tools but none of them detects the VRM module temperature, could it be that the VRM hasn't a thermometer in it? I've been using the card for a year and it's stable @ 1120 core, the memory is the only thing left to tweak. The bios editing tool I posted above doesn't have any field to modify memory voltage and I can't monitor it since it doesn't show up in afterburner just like the core voltage they are both missing, the same happens with trixx and all the other OC tools so I guess the memory voltage is at stock.

50C is about too hot too touch, so just because it feels hot doesn't necessarily mean it's overheating. VRM tends to be hotter then core though. Some 7950s dont have VRM temp monitors, basically any card that doesn't have a CHiL PWM, like many of the new Sapphires and those using the new cheapo pcb.
