[toms] Microsoft: Cloud Will Quadruple Power of Xbox One

Apparently when consumers purchase an Xbox One console this holiday season, they'll actually have four: one physical, and three virtual that will reside in the cloud.

Group program manager of Xbox Incubation & Prototyping Jeff Henshaw recently told OXM that for every console Microsoft builds, it will provision the CPU and storage equivalent of three Xbox One consoles in the cloud. This allows developers to assume that there's roughly three times the resources immediately available to their game. Thus, developers can build bigger, persistent levels that are more inclusive for players.

interesting if used to its fullest. Will vary from game to game, but for those that use this feature, hopefully will provide some promising results.

said the cloud can help with physics, fluid, and cloth calculations.

well only helps if you have strong enough internet connection...thats what id suspect people like me who live in rural areas or have outrageously priced dsl for horrid connections will just have to suffer

Edit: wait i guess that would only apply to online gaming, where you need to have brilliant connection to get the 4x more powerful xbox while gaming in enviroments that require alot of processing power from the all mighty cloud (sarcasm if you can not tell)

I hate how Microsoft pushing all of this cloud gaming garbage with their new console. They could encourage publishers to add cloud gaming into PC games if this is successful.

All of that can be done with a powerful enough GPU that could be four times as powerful as the one Microsoft put in the Xbox One. Microsoft could have probably put one in if they were not greedy and slapped on a Kinect camera into every single Xbox One console so that they can track your every move in order to put the appropriate ads on your Xbox One GUI.

Seems like something like physics calculations would be seriously latency and bandwidth limited. Doesn't seem like it would be the best implementation...

So many pessimistic views.

Try thinking of the benefits.

What's funny is good Internet speed in rural areas is a premium. Where I live I have two option for Internet And both are data limited. It's fast but they cap my data, so if I have a Xbox streaming all this stuff I better be prepared to pay a hefty Internet bill. No thanks Microsoft.

The problem i see with this is. They will be a hard enough sell at 500 dollars. 4x the gpu means maybe 700-800 dollars a system. Iam all for the cloud helping the xbox having amazing graphics. Hell i would buy into it for pc if i could save money on upgrades every 2 years. And most of the target audience for the new xbox live where there is decent internet.

Cloud computing is not "Something New". Can you really argue that physics calculations wouldn't be executed more quickly if done on a more powerful gpu in the actual console, without the inherent latency issues of going through broadband???

Not trying to be pessimistic, but I don't like having the cloud rammed down my throat.

Also, couldn't they take all the resources going into all the cloud computing centers and just spend that on improved hardware, sell at a small loss....

this makes no sense. internet speeds vary far too much for this to actually work-and that is what consoles are based upon: consistent hardware.

this is a joke and designed to convince consumers that they will benefit from content use restrictions that companies want from moving to a cloud based service.
