Game consoles had the luxury of used games for many years. Problem with used games right now is that company like gamestop will buy your game for next to nothing and resell it for 5-10 bucks less then new. Dev's don't get a cent of that used game money, Gamestop gets all the extra money. I am down to the destruction of Gamestop TBH, or at least hinder their business model.

MS is trying to force company's like Gamestop into losing profit margins, sadly this happens to inflicts on users as well. But if it ends up being a some fee like 5 bucks or something to transfer the right to a buddys XBL account then so be it. Though sadly it might be somewhere in the $10-20, though it would be nice if gamestop or who ever had to pay more to reactivate the disc vs just transferring the game over to a different live account.

Gamestop getting stuck with a $20 fee and users being able to transfer for around 5-10 bucks and I really wouldn't care. If steam were to add a way to transfer games to a different account for a small fee based on the cost of the game then I would be all for it as well. Though free is great as well, but not being able to do it outright is a totally different story.

pretty much this.

How do you calculate how "used" a game is? It doesn't change state. The game doesn't degrade. So it's nothing like a used car in which the second hand buying pays less because the car is no longer as good as it was when it first drove off the lot. The game that Gamestop sells "used" is the same exact game that the developers intended you to play, and they'd expect the full charge for it. (not NOTHING at all)

because they choose to make them digital downloads when they don't need to be, just to get their cut of the used market.

if i buy a physical book or movie, i can resell. but i cannot resell a physical xbox360 game, even though consoles are relatively piracy free, probably comparable to movies
post #143 of 223
How long until the first server outage shuts your game off? They're not going to have all the promised processing power for all consoles available all the time, they may as well have shipped better hardware in the box if that were the case (except that this whole idea has nothing to do with making games better, so that was never really an option).
And what happened to pre-baked physics and lighting? It sounds like all this cloud computing is going to be almost exactly the same thing, except with lag.
It reminds me of the opening sequence in Portal 2. It looked great, but that's all it did, it added nothing to the game. That's all cloud computing is going to be, a gimmick that makes a few scenes more interesting but does nothing to advance gaming.

You can sell something physical like a book, but even ebooks don't make it that simple.
You can buy a Physical 360/ps3 game and sell it, but online only versions you can not.

Thing is online world is not the physical world, this is why even steam games can't be sold. MS is not the only one using this model, Sony, Apple, Google among others use it as well. If you want to sell Make sure you buy it physical ATM. In the future we will probably get the ability to sell our used online only games (like steam and XBL/PSN games) they need to put measures in place that no Piracy can get through.

MS said nothing about not being able to sell your games, you can still do that. Seems the fee is being passed onto the Buyer and not to the seller anyway. Even though it will take some of the value away from the sale, but more likely not as much as you think.

Make sense by the end of this console cycle physical media will be dead. The next xbox will probably just software that is built into your TV.

I think this is an attempt by Microsoft to merge the traditional console method with a variation of the newer model attempted by On Live. It's interesting and I wonder how it will be implemented.

That's new(ish) and interesting and worthy of real discussion.

Of course, that would be impossible here.

All the negative outlooks from a technology forum is really depressing me. It's very obvious that both Microsoft and Sony are planning on keeping these consoles around for another very long cycle. Sure the cloud may not seem very practical now but what about a couple years from now? By then I'm willing to bet that the average internet speeds will be much higher (perhaps even 1 gig if google fiber keeps getting pushed making over ISPs up their game) in which case I think many will be glad that the cloud was put in place.

It doesn't seem like those ps4 games install onto your console like Xbox One games will.
Xbox One the Disc is mainly for the activation and Install Data. You Activate and Install and you no longer need the Disc. Save the Disc for when you want to resell and that is all you need to do.
PS4 You play your games from the Disc, The games themselves might install some data to the hard drive like the ps3 does, but the faster blu-ray drive should at least help on that factor. You can't play a PS4 game without the Disc just like every console before it. This is not the same with a Xbox One. So really by your thinking it would be the same as Steam. Steam you can buy a physical game copy at the store mind you, only difference is the game key is built into the disc not on a piece of paper.

Also you are not paying the fee the buyer is, you can sell it for as much as you would sell your used PS4 games if you wanted. It would only mean the Buyer is paying more for the used game. Really I'm not a avid fan of people buying used newly released games just to save 5-10 bucks. Dev's don't see a cent. Game stop does this all the time, sometimes they won't even have enough new stock just so they can push used.

Xbox One as a totally different model around how the Discs work.

If Microsoft and Sony were able to prolong the current generation to 9 years just by being able to upgrade the firmware how long will they push the new generation by moving more and more things to the cloud. Next generation in 2025? lol
