What display setups can SLI 2GB 680s run?

Thread Starter
By Christmas I'd like to be running a 3x 23" monitor setup like this one:

I play mostly modern first person shooters, and the more eye candy the better. Will a SLI 680 2GB setup be able to manage games like Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, MW3, etc. at max? High? 60 vs 120hz?

More vram is better for triple monitor setups. You already have the two 680s or thinking about it?
With the 780 now out, and from the few numbers I have seen it is a beast. Sli 780s will take care of your proposed setup.

I've also seen the vram arguement go both way, people have said they never come close to using all 2 gbs, but with the 780s having 3(correct me if im wrong) then it'll give you a little more wiggle room.

I don't have the 680s yet, but I'm getting them with Heatkiller blocks and back plates for the same price a 7950 with blocks alone before shipping (aka, an awesome deal). I'd be stupid to pass on that, I think, since SLI 680s outperform a single 780. I don't know what SLI'd cards do with VRAM though; it sounds like they don't add each individual card's VRAM?

It would be great if vram added but you are limited to the lowest amount of any card. So a 2gb and 4gb cards in SLI would only give you 2gb.

On any single monitor 2gb is usually fine especially if you don’t mind turning down the setting a bit. With triple monitor, and new games in the future I would get more than 2gb. So you can go 4gb 680s in SLI, or get two 780s which is what I would do if you can swing a little more money.

I wouldn't go 3 screens with 2GB cards but they would work adequately for a single 2560 x 1440 screen and a lot of people honestly prefer this to nvidia surround if you haven't tried each option.

xfire 7970s would work better for surround.

That is a valid point. If he is getting a great deal on the 2gb cards that he doesn’t want to pass up then he could consider a 1440p or 1600p screen. I have tried both, and I wasn’t crazy about triple monitor, but I have never stopped liking my 1600p.

I've tried and passed on 3x27" monitors in portrait (sig rig pics if interested) at 4320x2560 uncorrected it was a fun time but novelty to me in everyday usage. Like justanoldman I've never stopped admiring and liking a single 1440p display down in my office or a 1600p display upstairs in the media room. However usage wise with the 680s you should be average-above average in playability especially if it's 1080p x 3.

I'm going to say it won't get close to using the potential of a 120hz setup so I'd stick with 60hz unless sub 120fps is accepted.
AA will be the name of game more so than the other settings when playing at the high resolution thus vram comes into play more so.

If you go 1440p, 1600p or even 2560x1080 (21:9 displays) you'll have no problem pushing 60fps aside from say metro or a heavily done ENB on skyrim (dof mainly). For the 3 you listed you'll be a-ok.

I'm not opposed to the single bigger/better display. If that's best for my graphic setup then it is what it is. I'm just trying to get a gauge on what two 680s can do. This review seems pretty optimistic about a 5720x1080 setup. I didn't see whether the displays used were 60 or 120hz though.
