Laptop Referrals Wanted

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm going to graduate school starting in the Fall and I want to get myself a new laptop for classes. The one I have right now needs to be hooked up to a plug all the time and the battery dies within 15 minutes of being unplugged. So I'm looking for suggestions with some criteria in mind.

1. I play SWTOR on the side and while this laptop will not be my main rig, I'd like to be able to play every once in awhile on trips or in between classes. Should the laptop need a dedicated GPU to do this or can I run this reasonably on the new integrated gpus?

2. I would like the laptop to have around 4 hours of battery life (preferably more) if I could get that-- I understand that I cannot play games for 4 hours, but doing things like taking notes in class or working on papers/browsing the internet.

3. I'd like to be able to install a SSD that I already have laying around the house so I'd like something accessible or something with the ability to have 2 hard drive bays. I don't need a CD/DVD/BD player and that might help me I think.

4. I don't care either way for Windows 8 or 7. I enjoy both and can use both.

5. I am hoping to buy this off newegg as I have some gift cards there that I'm looking to spend. My budget is around $1000, but can be flexible if it can hit all of my wants. I'd prefer new, but if there's a refurb that is backed by people here I'll consider it.

If there are other things that I should consider please bring it up: like a new set of mobile chips or a new line of laptops are coming out in July or something like that. I can wait, but I'd like to play around with it sooner rather than later with August being the time I'd need it by.

Thanks and rep to those who can help. biggrin.gif

Probably a little overkill, but I'd have to recommend the Y500. Seems to be the best deal at the moment for laptops.

LOL

Of course it's overkill! I would have recommended something cheaper but this is OCN....Doesn't everyone need a LN2 cooled 3970 with a 1500 watt power supply and 3 Titans in SLI so they can play Minecraft?

I was looking for the MSI GX 70 on the Egg when i saw that Lenovo....it's looking pretty good to me since the GX 70 is at a premium price now, but I already have a crappy i7 lappy though.lol..i want the GX70!

Yeah... the GX70 is looking like the next best thing to go for. I'm honestly hoping that the clock speed boost from Richland will prove to help in some regard.

really nice to see a serious laptop with an AMD core. I run both but I have a soft spot for AMD! It's long overdue in my opinion. I might get the GX 60 instead as it's a little more portable. My 17 in Vaio is a little much to lug around...I've got an 840 SSD that should make the MSI fly!! Looking forward to the purchase!

Still trying tomdecide wha laptops i should be looking at , the asus 14 inch with a 660m seems to be my speed but im wondering if i should wait for haswell or push up to the gx60. I hate laptops but my current situation is demanding it. And i am completely lost. The fact so few reasonabley priced laptops are rocking small ssd's is frustrating.
