6 160GB EIDE Western Digital drives....

Thread Starter
So my work wants to destroy these disks because of data on them but they don't mind if i wipe them clean and use them at home. I've been reading about making a freenas box because it can store my roku movies and some data backup.

I've got a busted HP computer sitting apart in my basement probably a P3 1.2ghz? range or something. but its in a mini tower. Need some opinions on whether to spend a couple bucks on a full tower and mount the board with some customer spacers in it or??

Also what do you think the best way is to connect all these drives? Can some bioses only see so many drives and i'll need to get some PCI controllers?

Thanks!

As you can run only 4 PATA devices on that MB you are going to need an adapter for the others and that's usually a pain in the a**. By the time you buy and do all that and a gigabit card and maybe a better PSU you are getting awfully close to price of a 1TB drive with an USB connection. Another thing to take into consideration would be to get an PATA to USB or SATA converter and use those drives for backup if they are in good enough shape.

i would just clean and sell them. lots of places still need them. my company buys about 20 IDE drives a month to go into old copy machines because customers want us to remove the old one before it goes into the leasing company but the leasing company wants it to have a hard drive.... so i buy up a lot of old drives all the time.
