HUGE plans for my Scorpio Z

Thread Starter
I've had my Raidmax Scorpio Z for about ten years now, it's seen three systems... and I have no intention of replacing it (looks too B.A.) It's been slightly modded over the years... I did a horrible job of cutting out the two 80mm holes in the rear years ago (who cares.. no one looks at the back!..lol), cut the front out to mount a 120 (did a clean job on that cut), modded the fins on the front face for better airflow, repainted inside and out satin black (the original gloss black was showin it's mileage after eight years and countless moves), repainted the red on the faceplate to green, changed the power LED from blue to green (left activity LED's red), side 80mm fan from red, orange, and yellow LED fan to green one. That's so far... but I have more planned, I want to mount a pedestal under the case and move the power supply into it, and mount two 120mm fans in the top. The hole for the power supply and the two rear 80mm fan holes will be covered over.. not sure yet if I'll cover solid or mesh... depends on airflow.

Plans for Pedestal....I'm not very good at making plans.. but this should be adequate enough to get the idea.

Also does anybody here have metalworking skills enough to make that? I've been trying all week to try and contact a couple friends to make it.. but they haven't been around to see if/when they can/will (I don't have the tools to).

Gotta get ready for work now.. but I'll post pics of the beast in it's current form later.

So... now that I know the camera on my phone is awful.... I'm not very good with photography either, so I apologize for the bad pics.

Anyhoo.. how it is at the moment....
Side

Front

in the dark smile.gif

Unfortunately the camera doesn't do a good job at showing how it really looks, a healthy nuclear glow from inside. The green on the front panel looks darker in normal light, but glows bright under UV/blacklight (which the camera wouldn't see glow.. I could see it, but the cam refused to). The cracks in the paint were non-intentional, and at first I was a little upset, but I decided if I didn't like them it would be easy enough to change.. as you can tell I kept them, they look to good. I get asked how I got that paint to crack, I usually answer "it's a secret"..lol, really it's usually considered a flaw caused by getting hasty.

I need to do a bit of tidying up.. those white wires are for UV ccfl's, however they have no effect in this case.. they actually belong in my acrylic UV blue case, so they'll be coming out.

while I'm posting pics.. this is the shape of the fan hole(s) I want to do (3x 120 1x 80mm)....

I'm no artist so the crude drawing isn't scaled or proportioned correct...the double hole wont have a space between the fans, it will be one open hole with notches for the screws... it was just easier to copy one image and paste it in rough place..hehe.

Also, fans, and fan grills are on their way, should be here later this week (4-7 day shipping.. hey I can wait for free shipping)

3X of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835228013

and these to go with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811998098

I know Apevia arent the greatest fans.. but I haven't had any problems with them so far... and they are cheap. If I was water cooling I would spring for better fans with higher static pressure and better flow.... but I'm not so I won't.

You may have noticed I'm going to leave the space currently occupied by the PSU empty after it's down in the base (pedestal), this is if I should decide to try my hand at going under water to fit a rad and fans with ease... also sliding the mobo up would be a major PITA. If I can save the money up I'd like to do a CPU loop, I've been staring real hard (and drooling) at XSPC's kits.

Any way, long post whew... Cheers thumb.gif

edit: I would like to slide the mobo up about an inch/ inch and a half.. but that's ALOT of work frown.gif

Fans came in yesterday...I'd post pics.. but it's not worth it as I've ordered different ones. The Apevias I had ordered have MUCH lower airflow and pressure than I was anticipating... they were rated for 50 cfm, I don't think they blow even close to that. I threw the mesh grilles on them and the airflow was reduced to nearly nothing....with or without the grilles they were completely silent though! I would RMA them.. but return shipping is the same or more than they are worth, so I'll keep them for some other project sometime.

Instead of the Apevias I'm going to be using these: CoolerMaster SickleFlow

I'm also debating on whether I'm going to put two or three 120mm fans in top of the case. Three would probably be overkill buuuttt... everytime the word "overkill" is used on OCN I'm reminded of this..

Sooo.. now that the idea of overkill has been killed.. I'm deciding which will be the best in the long run as I'm drooling over XSPC's kits, though it looks like I wont be able to afford WCing for a long while. (i.e. not need to do more cutting later down the road should I decide to use a 360 rad)

edit: BTW.. how much space between the back of the case and fans should I leave? I was thinking about leaving 1-2cm space.

Also.. I got a friend willing to help me with the building the base.. however it's gonna be probably two weeks before we can get to it ( I want it sooner!!)

CoolerMaster Sickleflows came in today. They push a ton of air..oddly they run the same exact frame as the Apevias (different blades and motor though, but I think the same LED's! maybe Apevia is owned by CM?). I've been thinking about the fans in the stand, I was thinking I have those three extra Apevia's, mounting them on the sides. Was thinking two of them on the same side as the case window instead of one 80mm.. and maybe one on the otherside (I have a fan that is planned for the front of the base). If my math is in the ball-park.. the CM's will be pushing ~200cfm + videocard I'm guessing is close to 30-40 cfm + PSU ~30cfm.. so that's ~260cfm exhaust..for intake I'll have 2x 120's in front pushing ~110 cfm (120 max), the three Apevia's pushing ~135cfm, one 80mm pushing~30cfm in.. so that would be ~275 cfm in which will work perfect as the hole for the psu, and rear two 80mm holes will not be completely blocked off, I plan to cover them with mesh.. or maybe some foam filter material.... ooh.. I bought those black mesh grilles, I can cut and use those. All my fans run unfiltered (I don't mind cleaning out dust once in a while) with only wire grilles..... thinking of which I need to buy some chrome 120mm wire grilles... or some honeycomb style grilles (which I really want on top over the CM's)...

OR

Two of the CM's out(top), and put the third in place of the planned 80mm on the side of the stand.

but.. more is better...

can't argue with that logic lol! (I know, I know.. but I had to)

note: I neither work for nor use AT&T's services, the commercial just fit is all.
