Yes, what you described is tinting. IIRC, Arctic recommended doing that as well, although I haven't. Perhaps next time.

It depends on your cooler. If it has direct copper pipes, it's actually a bit better to put more than what's needed. If you have a normal flat contact, you need do put a dot.

My IC Diamond application says use a 5.0 to 5.5mm bead, so not all TIMS are suppose to use a rice size amount. I have used rice sized in the past on other brands, seems this is thicker so they say use more.

My method for tinting is basically using the TIM as a "rubbing compound" (like what you use for detailing cars) on both the block and the IHS, then using a lint-free cloth to gently remove any excess material (don't use a solvent, as you want the stuff that was "ground in" to remain). Then, I usually use a hair dryer on medium-heat to speed up the evaporation of any solvents in the TIM itself. Once that's done, and after 8-24hrs of letting them set just to be sure, I use about 1/4-to-1/3rd the normal amount of TIM, in either a dot or a line (line for SB-E, dot for IVB) and tighten the cooler as absolutely evenly as possible (diagonal corners, first just enough to get the threads to catch before switching, then 1/4-to-1/2 turn before switching back and forth until tightened completely).

With well-matched blocks/HSF surfaces and IHS surfaces, you can knock another 3-8C off your CPU.
