do they release new drivers that purposely slow down older video cards to encourage purchase of new video cards?

Ok, tin foil hat time/forgot medicine/conspiracy theory = maybe i'm imagining it, but it seems to me that new video card drivers seem to make older cards slower rather than faster.

Same game, same card, same resolution and options, same ram, same cpu, new driver = lower framerates

That would be a genius way to encourage people to buy new video cards. thinking.gif

Googled it, couldn't find anything about this. Am I nuts? confusedsmiley.pngwackosmiley.gif

Are you comparing results now with results then, on the same game, without anything else being changed?

Everything seems slower as it gets older and newer, faster things come out.

More likely what is happening is your entire system is just bogged down with other crap.

Best way to make sure that they are/arent would be to try older drivers.

I know that they do it with smartphones, but i dont think that it's happening with GPUs.

yes, same everything.

how would it seem slower when i don't have newer and faster things to compare it to?

maybe.... maybe i'm paranoid.... idk.... just wondering if anyone else felt the same.... probably should have had a poll.....

I don't have any hard numbers, but I can tell you I got higher performance with the older 11 series drivers with my 6970s before I upgraded. I don't know if they do that on purpose, though. I think it's more that the drivers are getting larger and the older cards are no longer a focus of newer drivers so they become less optimized for older cards. I'm no expert in the way drivers work for older cards, but I'd like to think something like that is happening.
