6350 vs 8350?

Thread Starter
I am on a very tight budget with this upgrade from my 965 and old mobo.

I already bought the new mobo, the Gigabyte 990fxa ud3 (perfect for me)

Now, I was set on the 8350, and then overclocking it to the limits (water cooling)

But, the 6350 came out, and am contemplating saving a chunk of cash and getting this.

although it is rated for 125 TDP like the 8350, actual usage shows this:

under load, the 8350 draws around 150 watts (not overclocked)
the 6350 is around 100 watts

So, i can come to the conclusion, with help fom other forums suggesting the same thing, that the 6350 will be able to overclock higher, due to its lower thermal footprint.

I am using this primarily to game, a little light photoshop here and there, some audio encoding, nothing more than the avarage user, and of course web browsing and such.

My Graphics card right now (had to rma, waiting patiently for the replacement) is a 7950, which will be OC.

I want the best performance, but for the best price. Is the 6350 worth saving the 60 bucks? and overclocking to 4.8-4.9ghz? Or should I Spend the full 200 on the 8350?

Any input would be appreciated, I am on a tight budget, but the 8350 is not completely out of reach.

What board do you currently have if its not a good 990FX board you might want to steer clear from the fx 8 core and overclocking.

he said he bought the gigy ud3 so he will be using that board.

save yourself some money and get the FX6350, it is a great chip and clocker plus will handle all you needs nicely.

this is sort of what i was thinking, just was wondering if there were any real benefits as of now. If AMD keeps on these same price points, I will upgrade to an 8 core or whatever they have in a few years, with excavator.

On a hyper 212+, what sort of overclock can I expect with the 6350? I mentioned water, because If i get the 8350, I will most likely get an h80 or so, to cool it off more.

i cant say for sure what overclock you will achieve since chips are different. if anything on a FX6350 i would expect you would have a better chance at 4.8 - 5.0GHz with a H80 - H100 or similar AIO than a hyper 212

Youre not going to get much with that Hyper. I had a Hyper when I first got my 8150 and I could get to 4.3 but that was only because it was on stock voltage. Once I got up over 1.375V, that Hyper ran out of horsepower quick like.

It does sound like the 6300 might be just the chip for you. Itll overclock well on that board which is a 8+2 board and that Hyper will be a better match for the 6 core.

does the FX6350 overclock further than that of the FX6300? If it doesn't then go for whichever is cheaper smile.gif

it is hard to say or guarantee that a FX6350 will overclock further than a FX6300. The FX6350 is a 125W TDP so you might be thermal limited over the FX6300 being only 95W. the FX6350 stock is 3.9GHz (4.2 turbo) compared to the FX6300 which stock is 3.5GHz (4.1 Turbo).. That extra 400MHz might put the odds in favor of the FX6350 overclocking better. In the end tho its all the silicone lottery so it will come down to the particular CPU you get. smile.gif

What is amount of tight budget? These CPUs are so cheap I would just move up to an 8320. May serve you better in the long run than a 63XX
