If you can get one cheaply enough 300 or less get it, maybe a cheap 7950 for 250, otherwise hold out if you can. No reason to buy a year old GPU at this point when prices are still high unless you really need those games.
I had 6870 crossfire for a while those cards still bring great fps to most games! And if u look at some benchmarks they come ahead of the 7970 in certin games!............. ( don't remember which ones they were sorry) If I were u id keep em they can still pretty much max out any game ive just never tried them on a eyefinity set-up so iam not sure how many monitors they can run if that's what u were planning on doing. The 7970 is still a wonderful card no matter what! ..........I heard the 7970 is better utilized as a single card then crossfire so be careful if that's what your plan is.Alot of people say 7970 single is great! 7970 cf horrible 4 some reason! .....................Good luck
well there is a deal going on on ebuyer for the 7970 thats why i put up the question and since amd are possibly releasing the 8 series after the consoles have been released which is at some point in q4 so thats a long time to wait but alot of people i know say the 7970 is an amazing card to play all games at max on 1080p so its a hard choice :/
Do u know what the 8000 series is bringing to the table? I don't read that much on upcoming products ( maybe I should lol) I just look into current gen stuff and I or 2 gens back!............ Yeah I don't see any game u cant max with your 6870 crossfire, same holds true for the 7970 it will max every game also if iam not mistaken? Its a matter of preference I would say in your situation! Both those combos are bad-ass so u cant go wrong either way!
Hell I remember doing benchmarks with my crossfired 6870s I got those puppys in the 80 fps zone in furmark ( not the best way to test but still ) a buddy of mine runs a asus matrix 7970 he gets 45 fps at the same test! ........
well my plan is to have just a single card setup and now i've sold one of my 6870's so i might as well get a 7970, the 8 series should be having the latest dx on it from what i've heard and since most games are rubbish ports now thats why im thinking of delaying but the 7970 can oc like a beast i've just seen some vids of it i can see now why so many people like it
By the way, there won't be 8 series coming except for OEMs. OEMs are basically rebrand of 7 series and they're only available for pre-built PCs which mean no performance gain and still a same chip as 7 series. AMD will skip their 8 series and 9 series will be their new gpus.
Are u gonna keep the 7970 single configuration right or crossfire it? U might wanna talk to a couple of guys here on ocn they would be better to provide u with benchmarks but rumors and just rumors I always say heres a perfect example!................ I have 2 radeon 6970s 2 of them are supposed to equal 1 radeon 7970 ( supposedly) ..... well according to some tests we did that dosent hold true! The 7970 was beat up a little bit lol-well actually it was trashed by at least 45 fps if not more! If u need proof just send me an im id be happy to provide u with my half of the test results, again iam not saying ANYTHING negative ON BEHLAF OF THE 7970 its a champ card no matter how u look at it! The older gen cards still have some fight left in them as well lol

yea i would love to do that but im trying to keep to single gpu atm until i finish my full gaming rig which is in idea stage atm cuz the mobo im using atm ent to good with two gpu's i've noticed
Not too sure about the 9 series stuff, haven't actually heard about that...
However, about the 6870s, I would keep it. I mean the 6870 crossfired give pretty good performance, I'm quite sure you can play most AAA titles at high settings at 1080p, not maxing it out, but deff at good quality. I mean the performance increase won't be too amazing as 2 6870s tend to have around the same performance as a 7950. Not even a 7970 can max out certain games at 1080p and have decent FPS. Crysis 3 is deff a fps killer with all those post processing stuff.
alot of tests i've seen on youtube and from write-ups say the sapphire stock oc with that boost thingy i'll im that guy for sure to find out whats what

Crysis 3 is way more demanding than crysis 1 and 2. AMD will surely release something later this year or early next year. If i were you I would hold up on those 6870s, they are still very good, wait for something new or go nvidia with the 700 series
I havent played crysis 3, so u guys are saying 1 7970 cannot max out crysis 3 and get 45/60 fps?.....not a good thing! Iam just curious what kind of fps does it get in crysis? ... Last crysis i played was part 2 & i had all the texture and dx 11 dowmloads and with my crossfired 6570s i was in the 60fps zone almost %90 of the time! Could be that i was playing on a 1366x768 resolution monitor not sure? .... Iam curipus to try the new one hopefully when prices fall a little bit more ill pick it up.

Me personally iam trying Nvidia after I finish=up my current etefinity setup!......Either a 690 sli or at the very least 580 sli they still get very good fps!~ I have been buying nothing but radeons going on a year now ive had the following..... Radeon 6570 single card, then picked-up another for crossfire......Then I got a Radeon 7770 hd picked up another for crossfire AGAIN lol- was disappointed with the 7770 I have to say! ..........Then jumped on a 6870 single/ then 6870 crossfire-WOW what a huge difference!~.............. Then single 6950 unlocked shaders to 6970/now running radeon 6970 crossfire with a possibility of getting a 6990 to throw into the mix~! But I need to make a few changes before I go that route this cpu and mobo wont handle 4 gpus I can bet my life!
Imho wait for the 9000 series aka volcanic island, which should be arriving in q4 2013 or q1 2014. It might be at 20nm which will drive power down and performance up. It will be a huge jump going from 6870 to 8970. If you can wait, zait. If you really need a new card now, go 7970.
haha, my heart is with AMD too, since you only got one 6870 you could maybe change graphic card to a 7950 (best bang for bucks) But really, at what resolution are you playing and what game do you play? Are you going to play future game ex. watch dogs bf4 assassin creed 4 etc

im thinking of the future and since an oc 7950 only just hits stock clocks of a 7970 and since i've seen stupid oc on 7970 thats what i might get for now and when the 8 or 9 series comes out i'll get them.
my 6870 cf was good but it did have problems it had alot of lag spikes when playing certain games and when i changed it to one 6870 they went so my mobo can only really handle one gpu so thats why im asking about 7970 because it seems to be able to play everything just on its own.

Man if u can afford it grab a 7990! 1 card with 2 gpus on it!..............That's what iam saving up for, but ill probably try out the 6990 1st if iam lucky to find 1 in decent coddition-The new 7990s will run you $1000 dollars plus some change but it just looks like a MONSTER of a card~! Espically the Devil-13!
