Definitely will need protection. But that is a different issue from M$ data mining.

What can you do on the kinect that will actually have Microsoft go "This is it?" I understand the paranoia, but I do way more suspect things on my phone than I would ever do on a kinect and unless they're already listening to my calls and monitoring my cell activity, I'm not seeing what exactly I should be scared of.

not scared. its just a personal feeling based on the value you place individually on you and your families privacy (and to an extent freedom of expression in the home)

not much more to it. Let people turn unplugging it, let people calm down and enjoy the experience

Sure this thread is about "snooping" but setting all that fiasco aside, some people miss the very basic question.

Why does Kinect have to be on all the time?

The answer is quite simply a: it doesn't.

It doesn't but MS is forcing it to be.
This is what bothers people the most I think.

Companies forcing things upon us and dictating what and what we can't do with a product we purchased with money we earned by working slave labor at the local Wallmart.

Please spare me the "power plug" defense. It's useless. Everything can be turned off that way.
I'm talking about having an ability to turn Kinect off, through itself or the X1, and still use the X1.

A short poem:

Xbone listens to your conversations so we don't have to! We won't use it for any nefarious plots, just to blow up our stock! The ads you see will be selected by we, as we listen in to you discuss the problems with your junk...
So here is an ad for Extenz, only $29.99, we swear its not bunk!
When you whisper goodnight to your sweet young kids, we will hear that and think, wouldn't it be great if next time you gamed you saw an ad for backpacks for school and pens with blue ink!
Of course in certain situations we surely must act, if we hear certain keywords, like "bomb" or "attack", then a call we must place to your local police, its for your own good and that of the whole human race.
Now lets forget all that and talk about movies! You can rent them now, which I'm sure you'll approve of. Our Kinect® will count your number of friends, so our buddies the MPAA we will not offend.
So the vocal minority can grouse and complain, but we think your gnashing of teeth is in vain, as Kinect® is the future and soon you will see, how much fun you will have in the Microsoft family.

I think MS is better off if they just toss the stupid bar into the trash and call it a day. And also re-evaluate the shoddy DRM while in the process. Their stock might just go back to where it was before the reveal.

The Kinect isn't on all the time though.

And no, but does MS care if I spend more time of this TV show looking at the screen vs another TV show? Do they care if I watch the ads? Do they care if I have other people over watching movies, etc with me? It's a non-optional advertising package, I don't get how anyone is defending this...Saying "All this stuff you do already is bad enough, what's a little more?" is like if someone smashed into your car then took a crowbar to the wreck and said "Well, it's going to get fixed anyway!"

It's Xbox One's Metro, people want a choice but MS doesn't want to give it to them to suit their own agenda and is getting a lot of flak over it, and a bunch of people can't possibly see why others would want that choice even if you repeat it in a way a 3 year old would understand to them countless times.

Do you watch Yahtzee and Jimquisition's Rhymedown Spectacular, by any chance?

Why yes I do. I read the Escapist, despite some sometimes desperately misleading headlines they have a lot of great content.
