[V2] Microsoft: "We Aren't Using Kinect To Snoop." - Page 18

I appreciate all the viewpoints here, but some things are being overlooked by some. This isn't a "glorified web cam". It uses facial recognition, is able to map images in 3D, and can sense a heartbeat. It also doesn't need light.
Now, in response to people discounting privacy concerns, I DARE you to say the words, "ricin", "anthrax", and "bomb" within earshot of this thing in a single day. I freaking dare you.

I won't have one of these in my house.

Heh, I actually have a friend that will call me some times and start out saying a bunch of random words that a terrorist might say and then says, "...and now that we have the FBI on the phone do you want to go to (insert bar name here) tonight?" He gets a kick out of it, though I keep telling him he's going to get us arrested some day...I haven't had any trouble at any airports yet though. I told him he needs to say the words in Arabic.

That is wrong on so many levels. Embarrassing I accidently brust out laughing when I read that as I could actually see that working. Not that there is any real relation to arabic and terrorist. The media and at times the fbi have been known to disagree. The fact they are right 1 out of 100000000 only strengthens this bias.

it's not necessarily true in a domestic sense, but it is true that muslim countries like pakistan and iran support terrorism against their enemies. heck, terrorists in pakistan's tribal areas routinely engage in terrorism against elements in pakistan they don't like

I know a lot of people are going to be ok with an always on Kinect that is connected to a device that is always online but personally I could never abide it.

Agree with your other points.

I see your point here but think about it this way if someone has managed to attract the attention of a 3 letter agency then the xbox isn't going to be the only tool deployed here.

Now, in response to people discounting privacy concerns, I DARE you to say the words, "ricin", "anthrax", and "bomb" within earshot of this thing in a single day. I freaking dare you.

I won't have one of these in my house.

I wouldn't have to be dared in fact I would willingly sit in front of the thing all day long repeating those words. Sorry but it takes more than repeating keywords to be flagged for a threat assessment. And yes this thing is a glorified web or combo of web cams to be more specific because it works on stereographic principles depth of field measurements. It happens to have an IR emitter and receiver so it can work in low light conditions. This thing performs for lack of a better word a cheap parlor trick to detect a heartbeat. It uses the flushness of your face and chest expansion to guess a rate. It absolutely cannot see through clothes to see anything. The thing is 3D but a passive set of sensors that work by combining two parallel images and resolving for parallax between with the known fixed distance between the two cameras and the depth measurements from a fixed field image. The 3D resolution is limited by parallax angles, resolution of the depth camera, and instantaneous field of view characteristics. Given enough time and will to actually do it, I could build one myself.

It is fine if you don't want one and you do have some legitimate concerns I can understand but this thing isn't a magical device. I don't want one myself but not because I am afraid of the thing more so that I don't think a internet connection should be required or the kinect required to plug into it. My theater equipment is built into a closet and I don't want to see wires and crap from this thing.

Ok so last point. We have all seen demos and clips and claims from people with this device doing amazing things. Well if I remember correctly the first kinect demos were very much the same showing some really cool things. I don't know about you guys but they never really worked like they did in those commercials. Worked? Yes but not exactly the same so I expect much the same from this one as well. We will just chalk that up to good marketing. There is no reason to be afraid of this device spying on you.

To be honest, if you buy it, you deserve what happens to you. As for the privacy policy. http://www.microsoft.com/privacystatement/en-us/xbox/default.aspx?xr=footnav

You can see it there. To be honest, it is one of the worst worded policy I have seen.
