[V2] Microsoft: "We Aren't Using Kinect To Snoop." - Page 28

The NSA approves this device. thumb.gif

I'd say the technology for snooping is already there or is just one patch away. In a few years time, under the guise of "national security" Microsoft might be covertly forced to enable some government agency to look into Kinect footage from certain devices. This could be one "incident" away, or one more Patriot Act away.

I keep seeing people saying: "Oh, this won't ever happen", or, "who's going to watch everybody".
This can happen, and they don't need to watch everybody, they just need to watch you - whether for the right reason or for the wrong one.

Saying innocent people won't be snooped on if need be is like saying innocent people never get accused of anything, ever.

That still doesn't change the fact I can't unplug it and have to own one, honestly after owning a Kinect this generation I'd rather not get a second one.

..There's also the fact that the hardware inside the Kinect probably cost more or equally as much than a GPU upgrade and double the RAM would, while proving more of a benefit for a significant portion of their established market.

Someone explain to me MS' backpedaling, because I couldn't really follow it. Are they now saying you can turn off kinect or just saying that you can turn off the device? There's so much double talk. I can't stand it. If you can turn it off - really off, not just video - why not just say that? Why all the argument over how they're not going to snoop?

I wouldn't say they're back peddling. There's just so much speculation going on in here that people think it's real.

You can turn the Kinect off. You can have it so it only listen's for "Xbox On." You can completely turn that feature off. The Kinect doesn't need to be on while gaming. It's not watching you. It's just there so the developers can support it freely knowing everybody will have one.

They just implemented a software switch, which means only naive people believe their privacy is safeguarded.

You can't physically disconnect the Kinect from the Xbox One without it requiring you to plug it back in, nor is there any mechanical switch on it for you to be able to turn it off. Only a mechanical on / off switch on the Kinect provides real privacy, software switches can be turned on remotely. People have two solutions: unplug the console from the mains or simply do not buy it. We all know which option effectively sends the message across.

so be it. It's a risk worth accepting. Guess I'll just live in fear when I buy one. Too bad. You can pity me later.
