add second ATI HD 6970 or what - Page 2

To correct the situation it is rarely used by friends most of time it is hashing lol notice i didnt say the other this time but yes 90% of its time is spent hashing rarely a friend will come over with another friend that doesnt have a gamign laptop and if i already have the game installed that he plays and wants to play with us i will allow him to sign in to his account and us all game but that is very rare like 1-2 times a month at max for a few hours.

I also want to point out the CPU and GPU are liquid cooled and i happen to have a second waterblock for a hd 6970 laying here so temps and such wont be a issue.

Because its a single screen, most of the time I'm pulling FPS in the triple digits and its sooo smooth with no screen tearing (oddly, I get heavy tearing when using V-Sync).

There are a few titles/levels where the FPS dips into the 70-80s and I notice the stutter. However, when it drops into the 40s, if feels exactly the same as doing 80FPS, not smooth at all.

Since its a backup rig for the OP used mainly by friends who don't want to be left out from the eye candy & decent FPS, I say its worth it (or they can bring their own damn laptops).

If you are pulling triple digit FPS, chances are you don't need the second card.

My experience with crossfire 6970s and 7950s has been a disaster. 3/4ths of games I play either show no perceptible improvement, or are noticeably worse with two cards, and the few games that are better already ran so fast that the second card became redundant.

If you notice stutter at 70-80 fps, try disabling crossfire and see if things get any worse. A consistent 40 fps should look at least as good as a stuttery 70-80.

well thing of it is i am running eyefinity for 90% of my games so i believe to crossfire a second hd 6970 will benefit me better for my secondary backup rig $100-$150 investment to crossfire and get equal to or better performance than a HD 7970 $350-$400 so obviously i am leaning towards the second hd 6970 rather than a hd 7970 purchase for my secondary rig which is why i opened this thread to get a idea of what the performance would be.

Yeah it's a good choice, 2 6970s will be 30% over 7970

cool TY any chance you got any video on how they would perform on a similar rig to mine basically it is a clone of my main rig minus the 3x hd 7970's at sec it only has a single hd 6970 overclocked highly though 950mhz core and 1450mhz ram i have actually taken it to 1000mhz core and 1550mhz ram without issues and 100% stable had to use saphire trixx to do so lol http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2779392 is a 5.0ghz CPUZ but i run 4.8ghz x8 24/7 both are 100% stable and yes the GPU and CPU are on liquid i happen to have another hd 6970 block laying here for the second GPU.

Ya don't have to worry about that let alone CF'ing 3 6970s
My rig runs along 24/7 @ 2.4 (Just like it there) with 50% CPU usage in BF3 MP spewing out 80fps on epic settings @ RadeonPro
