I'm £50 over budget and it needs a couple of 120mm fans for the case (and a cpu cooler if he wants to OC) but on the + side I've tried to include as much as possible and the GPU comes with some free games

http://www.cclonline.com/product/55411/P1-450S-XXB9/Power-Supplies/XFX-Pro-450W-Power-Supply-Unit-Core-Edition-/PSU0202/

Total £555.37

You could save £20 by getting a Gigabyte 970A-UD3 motherboard it would remove the option of running a second GPU but it does have a solid 8+2 phase and heatsinked VRM's unlike most 970 chipsets

That case is really well featured for it's price but it comes with no fans so you would need a couple of 120mm's

I wouldn't bother with Intel unless you can raise the budget by about £100 then use the above build but toss in a 3570k and use a Gigabyte Z77X-D3 motherboard.

*EDIT* by current standards the build has not a lot of storage its purely for gaming if he wants a general purpose PC he would want to fork out an extra £20 to get a 1TB HDD

I would recommend the A10 build. Last week I built a very similar build for a friend's GF and so far she loves it and it is performing great. Plus with the GPU for simulated xfire it will be great for a first build. I would suggest to get a better PSU though... Corsair's cx series is notoriously bad and especially at a bronze rating... Spring for a better PSU and this build will be awesome.
