Info: What do fan filters do and are they necessary?

Thread Starter
Fan filters are not necessary but they are helpful. They are basically filters attached to fans that catch dust, lint, and other airborne particles. They allow a much cleaner air to enter your case which allows for better thermal transfer from heatsinks. There actual performance benefits are questionable though. The one guaranteed good aspect about them though is that they will catch the dust that would normally accumulate into your computer and inside your fans. Dust inside your fans will cause your fans to become less efficient and lower your CFM rating and heavy accumulation of dust inside your computer can lead to short-circuits. The filters also need to be cleaned once in a while so that dust does not accumulate and the filters start limiting your intake.

true filters can reduce airflow, but's it's better to have clean air going into the pc than dirty air. Also you could try covering your fan with nylon. ie strech a piece of nylon over your fan before screwing it onto your case, easy to clean, cheap to replace + you'll get to see what would of ended up in your pc case too

for a good balance you can use fine cheese cloth. It won;t limit the airflow that bad but it will disturb the air enough for the larger dust particles to adhere to the cloth instead of your electronics. IT's always a good idea to crack open your case at least once a month to make sure a family of dust bunnies hasn;t moved in.
