Nope. You could run multiple cards independently. You can get 2P LGA2011 or LGA1366 boards that you can run SLI or Crossfire on. I have a Asus Z9PE-D8 WS and a EVGA SR-2 that I can run Quad SLI or Quadfire on. I only use them for folding, though.

And by the way good lord these Opterons are heavy! First two came in a static bag, bubble wrapped, nested in cardboard mesh fill, in a 10x8x4 box. Awesome pack job, my style. This 3rd one came in static bag taped to receipt free in a bubble #3 mailer envelope. rolleyes.gif I'm glad it made it to me OK. Bubble mailers are not ever a sure thing - we've sent stuff to customers in them where they get an empty bag with a hole torn in it. We only ship stuff like that which we are willing to provide a free replacement.

I like how these don't have pins, though! One chip's gold pads had what looked like stains on a couple pins. I rubbed them off and it looks ok. I hope that wasn't something evil happening and simply "something that happens" over time.

I'd rather have bent pins on a processor than on a motherboard... It was treat to unbend a pin on a processor compared to a motherboard. Those were the days! The stains were probably thermal compound.

More cores, better for virtualization. AMD server procs is where all the buzz is at, not intel.
Seriously, unless you come from a ecosystem full of Intel procs you have been totally losing out.
More cores > higher price.
Beyond 6 cores intel procs price becomes nasty. Even so their 6 cores are more expensive than a 16-core AMD ...

The thing is, any one Intel Xeon would probably murder one Opteron, so you've got to look at the bigger picture. I've got a Xeon X3440. At first it might seem kinda similar to the 6174s I'm buying... 2.5GHz, 4 cores 8 threads. The Xeon will overclock readily to 3.8 GHz on air. I had it folding at 4 GHz with a water cooled setup. I forget exactly, but those get about 30~33k ppd when folding. Few xeons allow multiple processors on the same board and the 3440 certainly doesn't. So 4 Xeon systems would make 120~130k ppd and heat someone's living room well.

This 4p rig I'm putting together should be up to 200k ppd. I might be able to clock them up to 3.0GHz. They'll run nice and cool on simple air coolers, and only require an 850W PSU, using an actual 650 or so watts. So if you take threads per watt per dollar, the recent Opterons can't be beaten. Now, when you start talking "server", this thing would handily serve up 8+ Windows 7 virtual machines. My ultimate goal will be to make it where we don't have computers at each desk; just have this thing serve everyone's computing needs. We'll see if I can virtualize to that extent.

But in the near term, this build is about peen, excessive number of cores, and folding built at the cheapest possible price. I chose the 6174 because it was the only 12 core Opteron on eBay at the moment where I could get 4 for under $200. I would have bought any of the 61xx series 12 core "magny-cours" Opterons and these were the best for cheap.

Edited, lost my mind and said 62xx series. tongue.gif

I wouldn't buy a 62xx though. They're much weaker than 61xx. Of course being BD tongue.gif and much more power hungrier as well
How about 63xx? It's PD.
