Dwood bracket spot fan enough to cool VRMs?

Thread Starter
I've got a reference Powercolor 7950 (no VRM plate like some revisions) that I bought an Antec Kuhler 620 for, as well as a Dwood bracket and 92mm fan that will mount on said bracket. I see lots of people on the forum, specifically in "The Mod" thread saying that they use passive heatsinks on their VRMs, but I don't remember any instances of people attempting to use just a fan to cool them.

Now before I get mounting, I'm wondering if the fan alone should be enough to keep the VRM at acceptable temperatures. If not, is it still possible to leave the Kuhler mounted along with the fan while I wait for some heatsinks to come in the mail or would it b e better to just leave the stock cooler on until I have everything ready? Thanks!

If the VRM is naked with no heat sink at all on it then just blowing air onto it isn't going to do much. You need the heat sink to wick the heat into the fins of the sink and then the fins will give a better surface area and resistance to air flow to help move that heat into the air.

In other words I would recommend that if you want to cool the VRM that you put a sink on it if it does not have one. I don't know who you plan on buying them from but you could them shipped to you in just a few days so I would wait till you have them to put everything together. There is no reason to take it out and then put it back in then take it out again.

You can run the RAM naked(although when OC'd I would still use sinks), but I would not even run at stock speeds with no VRM cooling. They get HOT, some users breaking 100c on the stock coolers.
