[Gem] Sony has used game ‘solution’ for PlayStation 4, might cancel plans following Xbox One backlash - Page 3

You guys should read this article on the used games debacle.

Yes, I think the whole thing with the Xbox One is stupid, and Microsoft is off their rocker, but it's nice to see it from both points of view as it kind of lets you stand on your own opinion.

It's very possible that Microsoft's model will rock game pricing because it removes an excuse that a lot of publishers have for game pricing.

However, given that most publishers are greedy jerks, I think things will stay mostly the same because people don't stand their ground.

I haven't bought a single Ubisoft game since FC2 (I have a whole other story with this one), and the last EA game I bought was SW:TOR. OH and the last Activision game I bought was SC2. I've done pretty well, plenty of other good games out there. Screw greedy asshat publishers.

Reality is, behind closed doors, both companies probably agreed to this. If one pulls out, the other will too.

You could always wait until they're sub-$10 like I do. That way, you at least still get to enjoy any of those publishers' games that you're interested in, all while sending the message to the execs that they can stick their new-release prices where the sun don't shine.

I've never spent over $40 on a game.

No, but many will stick with the PC and not get any console as a 2nd system. As a rough estimate, 15-20% of console gamers will move to PC.

Yeah I agree.
I used to be a console person, now all I have is a wii for my better half (which she never uses). I use the xbox controller which was the main reason for moving to pc. however I have been picking up KB/M controls on the odd game too.

Having owned a xbox 360 last gen (main machine) and a PS3 (barely used) I can say it will be either PS4 or nothing this round.

I just think that in the long term no matter what. All console gamers will eventually follow the herd of other's and you will do what microsoft tells you.
If they come out and say no xbox360 games will be compatible, then we will eventually get over it.
Its just the way it is and the new console will be around for the next 8-10 years anyways. I highly doubt, we will be complaining about it in the next 3 years.

Embrace the new out with the old, if you don't like that scenario, then Build a PC and have fun no matter what.

This was said back on 21st Feb this year.

Source - Sony tells Eurogamer: PlayStation 4 will not block used games
Quote:
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.

I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."

So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?

"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line. "So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

I said I thought that was fine.

Interestingly, I also spoke to a Sony source elsewhere at the event this evening who told me that the anti used-game patent discovered last month was actually nothing to do with PlayStation 4 at all.

The patent suggested that discs would come branded with a contactless tag that could be recognised and read by your console, which would then bind it to you and prevent you from selling it on.

But whatever reason Sony did have for patenting it, it sounds like it wasn't for its next-generation console. Hopefully Microsoft will also avoid this ludicrous technology with its next-generation Xbox as well.

So until Sony prove otherwise I am willing to give them benefit of the doubt.
