Silverstone Grandia GD0X Owner's Club - Page 30

Thanks for the info Jibatron. I think in the end I'm going to end up going with a different case after all, due to the issue of the cd drive cage interfering with cpu heatsink height, and intending by buy RAM with heatsink for overclocking potential. Although the computer will be used as an HTPC, my build is also specifically intended for for VR, so having more room for a sizeable heatsink/fan combo, as well as more overall airflow in the case will be beneficial. I'll be using the Carbide Air 540 case by Corsair, which granted is not truly an HTPC case, but it just barely fits into the built-in shelf, and looks decent. I've been happy with my Silverstone LC20B case from my last build several years ago, but this time I want to make sure I've got all the headroom I can find.

Thanks again!

Nicely done! That NZXT AIO looks like a great choice for this case. GTX970 is a beast of a card.

The nzxt has great tubing length. More than enough so the tubing doesn't stretch and potentially leak like antec kuhler did. Cable management was still a pain though. The flat modular cables did help in the long run.

So glad I found this thread. Really like the case (9B) but I've learned the hard way that CPU cooler options are few and far between. jibatron, your TX3 is tempting for the ease of installation alone. Do you have clearance of all the ram slots and do you think a full-size dvd drive will fit? I'm willing to sacrifice my barely used drive if I can get a quiet cooler in there.

the cooler does clear all the ram slots on my mobo granted that is with the fan on the back sdie pulling ait thru the tower instead of the default blowing air thru. I also would think that a DVD player would fi with this cooler. there is some space between the end of the DVD bracket and the cooler. I obviously cant say 100% for sure but i would think so. i have a noctua fan coming in the mail to change out the TX3 fan (its to noisy) and when it shows up ill try and take some better pics

Thanks! Much appreciated. I'm currently going back and forth between pulling the trigger on the $20 TX3 or splurging $60 on a Noctua NH-L12 which comes with two very quiet fans by default. Removing my motherboard at this point is something I'd really rather avoid, though. Strangely enough I was *just* looking on amazon at 92mm Noctua fan prices after reading (and watching) about the noisiness of that default TX3 fan. Here's someone's results with doing that very swap that I found:

http://whrl.pl/Rcb6BH

edit: just going to paste in the relevant details:

"For anyone interested in doing the same, here are the core temps of my i5-750 using Real Temp (room temp 24 degrees).

Max core temps using TX3 Fan under load:
Max RPM: 2606
C1: 53
C2: 48
C3: 50
C4: 49

Using Noctua NF-B9:
Max RPM: 1901
C1: 54
C2: 49
C3: 52
C4: 51

"

I'm also looking at replacing the case fan with a few Nexus Real Silent 120mm fans. They seem to be very quiet and inexpensive. I'm not yet quite sure how the airflow volume rates, but the reviews are very good.

Well it all comes down to the $$$ lol I chose to go with the tx3 for that reason. Even with the additional purchase of the nf-a9 I'm still a decent enough cheaper than the noctua coolers. They are better, no doubt. I was picking between the tx3 and the nh-u9s but decided to go with the tx3 for the simple fact that it's cheaper and almost as good. Tx3 cost me 18cdn Bucks vs 70cdn bucks for U9S. The nh-l12 was way to much here lol so if u don't mind spending the money and pulling out the mobo you will end up with a bit better temps or spend less time and money with a little bit worse temps. Also I would think a down draft cooler might not be best in this tight case. That was my reason for picking a tower type cooler. Like that it fires the heat right out the back and out. That's just my thought tho. No scientific proof or anything** lol

Yup, paying for a cooler that costs almost as much as the case seems counterproductive. I just want this thing to be cool and quiet, and the cheaper the better! biggrin.gif

The BeQuiet dark rock LP that i have used in my GD09 is fantastic, very small, very quiet, and does a great job cooling my i7 920 @ 4.2GHz....really recommend it.
