Silverstone Grandia GD0X Owner's Club

Introduction:
Following the success of the venerable Lascala series, Silverstone in 2007 launched the Grandia series of HTPC case, the GD01. Updated with an advanced 52-in-1 card reader, enhanced low speed fans, and improved hard drive mounting bracket, the GD01 is then matched with the classic lines from the most popular Lascala HTPC cases of the past to make a truly appealing package.

The introduction of Grandia GD07 and GD08 cases from SilverStone ushers in a new era of home theater computing like never before. For the first time, the power and storage capacity of a server can now be neatly stowed beautifully and quietly in a home theater environment. Completely reengineered to fully utilize all available spaces, the Grandia GD08 can accommodate an incredible amount of drives (up to twelve) and high-end components (graphics cards up to 13.6 inches long) with minimal sacrifices. It is even possible to fit SSI EEB (12" x 13") extended ATX motherboards in the GD07 despite maintaining an exterior dimension similar to SilverStone's previous generation full-size HTPC cases.

Hello! Welcome to the Silverstone Grandia GD07/08 HTPC Case Club @ OCN!! There aren't many case clubs here at OCN dedicated to HTPC using this awesome case from Silverstone. If you would like to join the club, please send me a PM and post up some pics/ description of your build. Once we have enough members, we can become an "Official" club here at OCN.

What I dont like about that style of case and for that matter mITX cases either is teh complete lack of cable management. Its probably my OCD but I cant stand it when you end of with heaps of cables just stuffed in the case ruining airflow.

Other than that I think its a decent case and a lot more suited to the living room than a HAFXB

I dont think there would be an issue with running a H60 off the front fan points if they are 120mm.

I've been toying with the idea of a HTPC built in a Silverstone FT03 which can fit a mATX mobo and an H60. It would kind of look like a subwoofer similar to my Home theatre stereo. Maybe thats also something that would work for you as well.

I was looking at the FT03, but was looking at more of a set top box like case where I can also fit water cooling into the case.

I'm trying to figure out if I can get water cooling to work in this case with a push/pull configuration by placing the radiator in one of the front fans. I know there is only a few inches under the case in height, but it can still dissipate enough air.

Here are some pics of the build with the Silverstone Grandia GD08.

  1. I took out the drive/optical cage and started to strategize how I was going to add the H60 cooler first due to my motherboard.
  2. I then moved the fan in the upper left hand corner to the right side.
  3. One thing I do not understand here is that why weren't the optical drives placed to the right side of the case.

  1. I had to first insert the H60 Cooler and Corsair SP120 fan into the second fan slot pulling in air.
  2. Then had to slide in the motherboard, but couldn't place the two motherboard screws under the H60.
  3. I placed two Cooler Master 80mm fans as rear exhausts. I used a Y splitter for these fans to the motherboard.
  4. I placed the 660 Ti FTW 2gb Sig 2 card in since you can't install the card with the drive cage having been installed first.
  5. I wired the front two fans, which are setup as intake fans to pull air into the case from the front. I also used a Y splitter for these two fans to the front of the motherboard.
  6. I installed the Corsair CX600M PSU and started to route some of the cables to where they are not as messy using ties.

  1. I installed my two hard drives into the right drive cage, a few inches to the right of the 660 Ti. One drive is a 500gb and the second is a 1TB HDD.
  2. I want to eventually replace that 500gb with a SSD either 128gb or 240gb when prices come down a little bit more, especially for this case.
  3. I installed the USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter to the USB 3.0 cable for the front header.

Overall this case has been a real pleasure to work with, except some of the minute little issues that I ran into because I was trying to fit a water cooler in here that wasn't part of the design spec. I am considering adding a fan possibly on the outside of the case in the open fan slot to the left pull air out.

I did spend a good 30-40 minutes trying to figure out how and where I was going to add that water cooler. I didn't want to go back to air cooling so I had to find a way to make it work, even though I would prefer a push/pull style of setup like I did in my previous case. I had to cut the optical drive cage to get the entire drives cage to fit in. Silverstone should of placed screws on each cage to make them removable by the user based on their needs. Picture to come of my cage having been cut to fit.

I also want to get some black sleeves to stay with the black color theme that I have going to cover up some of the cables.

I also have a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W PSU laying around, been debating about putting that in here but seems like its too much for my rig.

Great job and thanks for the pictures!

I have the GD-06 case and I am struggling a bit with the heat from my Zotac GTX 660. Under moderate load, it reaches 57oC and the heat is not evacuated well enough. It transfers to the case, the PSU (fan goes up and so does the noise) and the HDs (4 of them, reaching 45-50oC). So i am considering the GD-08 as it seems to have better cooling capacity.

So what sort of MB and HD temperature are you seeing with this case?

Thanks for any info!

Your welcome. I am in the middle of putting together a Case Club thread for the Grandia cases here on the forums. I might just possibly use this thread with the help of the mods to turn it into that.

Right now, everything stays very cool in this case. I have the 2 120mm fans upfront pulling air in. I have the 2 rear 80mm fans in the back pulling air out and on the side you can see I modified the optical drive cage so I can fit in the H60 water cooler for my CPU. That air pulls in too. If you take a look on the some of these pics, there is an exhaust vent towards the top of the case. I plan on mounting either another 2 80mm fans there or there is a PCI like slot above it but the fans I have found I've read are pretty bad. With zip ties, I might add those fans to the top with rubber mounts to exhaust.

I am also looking at 2 -120mm x 12mm fans to place one under the drive cage that I cut since the radiator is there and a regular 120mm won't fit there. On the left of the rad, I can't fit a reg 120mm so I need to place the second one in there.

I really like this case a lot and wish that Silverstone would of placed the optical drive to the right.

I had a 660 Ti FTW Sig 2 in this case for a week and the temps never got above 57 degrees. I have a EVGA GTX770 ACX being delivered today since I returned the 660 Ti last week since I only had it for 2 weeks. This card will be a true test in this case which might make me have to get those 80mm exhaust fans on the top of the case much quicker to expel heat.

My CPU due to the cooler when idle hovers from 29-34 degrees and when on load around 39-42 degrees. My CPU keeps pretty cool, I think the key there was getting the water cooler in here even though I had to modify the optical drive cage. I can always add an external DVD drive if need be. Personally, I would go with the GD08 from Newegg or Amazon since they have it on sale for $139 unless you find it cheaper elsewhere. I had the Fractal Design Node 605 for a week, while that case was excellent, it was smaller than the GD08.

Thanks for coming back with info. Please do come back again once you have the GTX 770, that is indeed going to severely test the cooling capacity of that case.
What about temperature reported by the motherboard or the hard-drive? Do you remember where they were? If not, what are they now with the 770?

Yeah, I am watching amazon and newegg prices, hoping for little sale for father's day or 4th of july to make me pull the trigger

Thanks!

I don't remember what my motherboard or HDD's are at temp wise, but I will look tonight. I think the HDD's should be very good though since I have 2 fans in the front blowing underneath them. I plan to get an SSD this summer, so I might get rid of the 500gb at some point.

I've kept an eye on the GD08 for sometime and the lowest I saw it at was around $139, but it could go lower.

Once I get the 770 in there tonight, I'll report back with temps. As an FYI, there is an open vent above the GPU slot where I want to add some 80mm fans, I think this also helps expel heat.

I also have a different PSU in there now than I did in those original pics that I need to test out and see how that performs.

No cable management? Get creative!

Both the 4+4 and 20+4 can be ran under the motherboard just fine, if the 24 pin is bundled in one sleeve like many manufacturers do, take it off and tape then flat to the rear of the case. If you want you can save the last 4-6 inches of sleeve for the little bit of wires that might be visible.

HDD's and ODD space is pretty straight forward, 90* ( HDD ) to straight ( MB ) SATA connectors for each HDD and if you want, stitch or tape them together where they need to be to keep them absolutely flat. Power connections for them are pretty straight forward too, as most power supplies have a bunch of 90* ( or pass through ) SATA connectors daisy chained.

Next time I open up mine for cleaning out or swapping a hard drive I'll snap a few shots of how clean it can really be. If you're ever used a Lian Li case this is all pretty much the same tactics

As to the heat question above, when I had a 650 in mine the heat wasn't too bad. Currently though I have it packed with HDD's and the heat is still good during backups / syncs. Not sure why your PSU would be affected unless you're not taking advantage of the external air source ( in your case, fan facing down ). That way it's always in-taking cool air and directly expelling it out of the case. And if you use both 80mm fan's on the rear above the IO it should be exhausting plenty of the hot air... How is your airflow set up? And is the case in an area where it can breath? Or is it stuffed in a cabinet barely big enough for it to get any air?

Thanks!
laverdure, I installed the 770 and played about 20-25 minutes of Max Payne 3 at almost maxed out settings. The 770 stayed at about 57 degrees for most of the gaming session which is very good since the 660 Ti was around the same.

For the HDD's, they were at 31 and 33 degrees which doesn't seem too bad.

My motherboard was between 38-40 degrees.

Considering all the crap that I have in this HTPC, this is pretty good. I think once I get the rest of the case fans in this thing might be running even a few degrees lower.

@CaptainZombie: That is really impressive! And promising for my lower TDP 660. Thanks for looking your temps up and reporting. Enjoy your new GPU!

@Shrak: I think your comments were for me. You guessed right: Due to depth constraints, I had to mount my ST55F-G PSU upside-down, and therefore the fan is drawing air from inside the case instead of cool outside air. Even worse, I have a HD right above the PSU so that surely does not help...

Sounds like I have 2 options:
1) Take out my GPU and rely on HD4000 for htpc duty ( no gaming so OK but no fancy madvr either then). No extra spending and silent system.
2) Get that GD-08. I can use my dGPU and hopefully maintain reasonable heat (looks like yes) and silence.

Decisions, decisions....

Cheers!

Ah ah correct! Sorta already went down that road, originally had an Antec EA380D in there and got that ST55F-G hoping to improve noise. Failed!
Looked around pretty hard, did not see better options psu-wise....

Me thinks me need needs new case....

laverdure, I would definitely look at the GD08 as a HTPC and for gaming. There is so much room in this case that you can possibly even SLI or Crossfire 2 cards in here as long as you get probably 2 NVIDIA cards in there which won't produce a lot of heat.

The Silverstone fans in here are very quiet. I even went to my bios and tuned my fans to lower their speed since they were a bit on the high side.

I think if you can find a good PSU that is quiet, add water cooling like I did and fill the case with as many fans as you can there should be no issues with noise or heat. Like I said, there is even a nice opening at the back above the GPU........

Here you can add a PCI fan which is sideways or get 2 80mm fans and tie them to the grill. This way you are pulling hot air from the GPU and anything around it out the top.

That would be great. Id be interested to see the shots of front and back to see how you would get tidy cabling in a case like this.

No problem. I hope we can get more people with this series of cases to join in on the discussion. It is interesting to see what others have done. I wonder if at Computex they showed off a GD09 or not?

If I had the funds and means to make my own case, I have some crazy HTPC ideas. The GD08 is about as close as perfect you can get for a HTGPC imo and with a few changes the case would be top notch. I sent a PM to Silverstone on these forums about a week ago, but he never responded so my thoughts have gone to the wind.

SilverstoneTek showed a prototype of the Raven mITX case. Might work out to be pretty good.

That Raven mitx case looks pretty cool. I wonder how the video card slot works in this thing. It just seems like odd how its placed on top of everything. Really cool how you can fit a water cooler in there too.
