The overall idea is to have your forearms parallel with the ground and then to have your wrists straight with your arms. So your wrists will not have any kind of bend to them. What a wrist rest does is make it so you don't let your palms dip and cause your wrists to bend up. The fastest typers would not use a wrist rest probably, they would just let their hands hover over the keyboard. This will allow for the most unrestricted movement..

I see, but is it worse for your hands to rest them on something, like a book?

I have noticed though that I type faster on my laptop where I can rest my hands on the base of the laptop. So how should I position my hands when typing? Thanks any help is appreciated

They're right. My hands only sit on the rest when they're waiting to type; it's faster to keep them up.

Good question. I'm going to go with no it doesn't hurt to rest them on something while you type as long as it puts your wrists at the correct angle. Really what ever is comfortable is best, if something starts to hurt then adjust your style.

You never rest the hands anywhere when typing.
