Ok so I am currently in the WANT market of a new GPU not so badly needed as my 7970 is still decent for what I play.

So I was extremely hyped for the GTX Titan when it was announced but crushed when I saw the price.

Now the 780 is out and it doesn't seem any better than what I expected. And now the rumors flying out the ying yang of the next gen 9970's coming out later on this year...

Is this even real? I found this comparison, SORRY If it has been posted several hundred times as I'm not active on these forums much.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-9970-vs-GeForce-GTX-TITAN

If that's even close to real than I would definitely wait until the 9970 is released later this year. BUT I don't want to end up waiting and it turn out the 9970 weaker than a Titan and stuck in between the 780 and the Titan. -Which is one of my predictions.

As for VRAM well, 3GB I don't even need or use on my current resolution so I could care less, I just want a faster single GPU solution.

Crossfire is out of the question I absolutely hate multi GPU setups as I have gone through at least 4 Crossfire setups in the past and every time I ended up selling a card(s) because of the horrendous optimization, scaling etc.

So I guess what I'm trying to get at is; Is it worth biting the bullet now and buying a Titan or wait until later this year for the 9970 to be released and hold it down with my 7970?

OR I was thinking about doing, just skipping the next gen batch of AMD cards save my money, and wait it out until the alleged Pirate Islands are released the generation after. (OH THE AGONY In waiting.)

The problem with waiting is that there will ALWAYS be something better "Coming Soon" or "Recently announced." I picked up a 7950 soon after they came out, but was warned off by multiple people that what I SHOULD'VE done was wait until the 8000 series came out, that THAT was worth buying! When I bought my first CPU, Bulldozer was worth waiting for. When I bought my BD, PD was worth waiting for. When I bought PD, Steamroller was worth waiting for.

Buy something. Buy what you like. Buy it now. I'm not suggesting Titan. You can get a 7990 for the same price. You can also get 2 7970GE's and still have some cash left over. Plus, the CF performance with two 7970GE's is better than the Titan.

Titan is grossly overpriced. Hate to say it, but only those compensating for small genitals are buying them. Do yourself a favor - 8970 this summer.

The OP specificly stated he does not want a CF solution, but a single GPU setup. Both suggestions are therefor invalid. If the 8000 series will indeed release in Q3 this year, I'd say wait for it, since Titan is alot more expensive atm, then the 8970 would be.

^This, there won't even be any games releasing for the rest of this year that are going to be good enough to make anything sweat. Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light are the only games that really push people's systems. Two whole games. The 780 is a great card, and it's priced accordingly if you look at how a 680 performs and how much it costs.

I would not consider GTX780 a upgrade option for only 20% more performance. I would wait for something better.

As long as your 7970 is enough for you at this time, I would just stick with it until the 9970 comes out. The 8970/GTX 780 just doesn't seem to have enough of a performance boost to warrant an upgrade, and the GTX Titan is just not worth the price IMO.

Why not throw in another 7970? IMO, it really isn't worth upgrading til after the new consoles are out. Shortly after we should be seeing more new tech anyway.

I wouldn't even be considering the Titan now that the 780 has been released.

If you're fine with 3GB VRAM at the moment, then the 780 is definitely a potential option, but I would only do that if you are currently not satisfied with your 7970.

If you are happy with your 7970, then I'd wait to see what comes in the future in terms of games as well as GPU's, and maybe think about upgrading then.
I've personally never thought that upgrading every single generation is the best thing to do, but clearly a lot of people on this forum do tongue.gif

just my thoughts. smile.gif
