No! Dont get an i7 if you are going to do gaming.
Difference of an i5 and i7 is support for hyperthreading, which means 2 threads per core. You wont benefit a single frame in games against an i5

the 780 is stronger than a 7970, so i would say that the 3770K would be a minumum to your requirement. somehow ht or more cores are helping in highend gpu setup. cpus are lagging behind the speeds of today's gpus - just my observation.

Only thing that could help in multi gpu configuration would be x79 platform as it offers x16 , x16 pci-e lanes.

yes, if i have the funds and the plan to build a new system based on the same requirement the op has - i'll go x79.

what game will push an i5 or i7 to 100% usage?

I have yet to see my ol 2500k hit 75% usage in over 10 games (haven't tried Arma though)

Haven't they done tests with current gen cpus where they lower res and show an for ceiling for certain games and then raise it to see if there's any bottlenecking going on? Cpu influence still pales in comparison to gpu in a majority of games especially with ultra high settings

Well i wouldn't recommend it... Considering that it's quite a bit more expensive but you wont see a huge difference from the extra pci-e lanes...

true. it is all about balance not just performance but cost.

$1000 cards for X79.

$200 cpus for $500 cards.

So just to be safe.... A 3570k at 4.5ghz won't bottleneck 2 780's?
I have decided to switch over to a 1440p so will the second 780 help?
The reason I wanna get two is if I get my summer job I will have enough for two and if I only buy one il spend the money something stupid. frown.gif
