Ive been thinking about doing this for a while now- I haven't had the money to upgrade but something GREAT just happened I got a decent paying job ( yay for me lol ) anyway what do u guys recommend I buy? .... I really like the new Radeon 7990 if I were to grab 2 of those bad boys along with a better cpu and motherboard do u think ill be ok for about 2-3 years ( not have to worry about upgrading) .... I will keep my word and set-up a freebie and give away 2 refrence design Radeon 6970s to 1 lucky winner,If you are wondering why iam doing this DONT lol because I don't even know why,I just feel a need to give when I have extra iam that kind of person!.........Lets get some opinions what combo should I be looking at? ...i7 3770 k with a high-end motherboard and 2 radeon 7990s? What about 2 Nvidia 690s? I like both I wont lie,my heart is with radeons that's all ive used, but I know Nvidia is right there next to them so

i will recomend the gtx 780, or wait for gtx 790. don't go amd if you are going to use multiple cards, imo.

as for cpu and mobo, wait for haswell even if you don't want a haswell system, the previous gens will surely have a price drop, it's around the corner anyway.

Depends what you're going to use them for, gaming, folding/high performance computations, or both.

AMD does offer more bang for buck. If you aren't on a budget, then definitely consider 2x 7990's.
Go with haswel instead of ivy at this point in time for platform. also if you want dual GPU cards, 7990's get my vote. actually even consider a 3930k and a nice x79 with running two of thoose cards, or you can go 4 x 7970's or 4 x 780's.

I'd go with i7-3770K and 2 7990's simply because they're more powerful than 2 690's. If I'm you, I'd go with 2 Titan's for 2K or if you want to save 700 bucks, get 2 780's instead. The performance of 2 780's is just slower by 8% than 2 Titan's but save you 700 bucks! If you overclock the 780's, you will exceed the performance of 2 Titan's at stock.

Of course it will better to get 2 7990's if performance is what matter for you. That would be a beast set up!

With a week or so to go I would wait for Haswell. Im a fairly committed AMD fan myself. I would get a Z87 Mobo, 4770K, dual 7990s and some 2800MHz RAM.

Let's talk processors and Gpu's.

Processors:

This is a very tough choice, I would take the 3970 > 3770 > 3930. Have a look at the overall and single threaded charts provided - keep in mind that the 3770k will overclock the best, and that single threaded performance is the most important factor here (with overall performance mattering mostly for multitasking:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

Single Threaded:

Overall:

The 3970 does not justify the extra cost - and 3770 provides better motherboard choices - like a Maximus or Gigabyte. Be sure to use watercooling - however that is a discussion for another day. As you can see in the charts, the 3930 lacks single threaded performance, and the 3970 only offers superior overall performance - so considering that your objective is gaming, the price, performance, oc'ing ability, and motherboard choices make the 3770 my recommendation.

GPU's:

Each GPU will perform differently depending on the game. AMD cards typically crossifre better than nVidias. Here are some performance metrics for the two individual cards:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/765?vs=771

Blue: GTX 690
Red: AMD 7990

Performance:

Power/Heat:

A pair of AMD 7990's seems the obvious choice here - especially considering that when crossfired they will scale better. Make sure to put these under water as well.

Other things that should be heavily considered are the:

-PSU (Seasonic?)
-SSD (Raid 0 840 Pro's?)
-Cooling (Custom water loop?)

However, these are a discussion for another day...

Great to see OCN members stepping up and helping eachother out with charities like this - stickin together - yeahhhhh! Can I ask what new profession you have found? (super curious)

I must say I am dying for a quality GPU - my 7750's are quite the bottleneck.

Also, if you do decide to donate the cards - split the two cards up and give them to separate individuals - share the love!

Peace,

Feast

Oh, and a little something to make you salivate:

Quad 7990's anyone?

Feast u think i schould split them up buddy? Like 1 card to each member? I will consider that and its a very good ides your right!....but again i look at u guys as family i wouldnt do this for qnyone except u guys! .... Iam gonna be working with my father were opening our own company pretty much home interior remodoling;), my fathet in law on the other builds new homes so iam thinking of putting these 2 guys together there both super awsome in there own field! Combined they will be very hard to beat but iam the middle man u can say lol........2 7990s & its for maxing out games on eyefinity
Holly cow man is that 4-7990s? I cant imagine any game taxing those suckers out huh>? I think the max I would go is 2 and that should be enough for someone like me I maninly play flight sims so nothing in the market currently I can max with my 6970s ( flight sim wise ) The 7990s will be a nice replacement ive always wanted dual-gpu cards!
