The difference between 3770k and 4770k is very minor, probably less than 4-5%. If you have a good deal with 3770k, go ahead with it otherwise go with 4770k.

Yes, you would get a decent benchmarking scores with a 6990 and 6970s but not in gaming. I can assure you that they will perform very bad in gaming. Honestly, I won't go with more than 2 gpus.

Two GTX 780s is what I would recommend. For the CPU and mobo I would recommend a socket 2011 chip and an Asus Rampage something.

I believe you would get a decent benchmaking scores, maybe a slight bottleneck with i7-3770K.

Sorry but most people here give advice and spread misinformations. Probably most of them never used 3-4 gpus on the past. Just link a review with crappy reviewers and wrong benchmarks. The best setup for gaming is 3 cards. 4 cards is only for benchmarks nothing else. Now the people that told you that with 4 cards you have worse performance from 2 or 3. I guess they never did troubleshoot.

Also i would choose 4 7970 diamonds the 7990 is high ASIC quality cards and they limit a lot your overclock. If you have space problems then ONLY then get 2 7990s.

tl;dr; Get 3 7970s if you want to gaming,4 if you wanna rock 3dmark charts

Yes, in gaming not in benchmark.

On grid 2 with 4 gpus tsm have 100% gpu utilization. And when i used to play with my quad only skyrim had negative scaling. Your first hand experience?

Sometimes, we don't need "first hand experience". That's why we have many reviews out there for our guidance. As I said, the majority of reviews that I've read shows that most games couldn't utilize more than 2-3 gpus. At most of the time, they perform worse than let say 2 gpus. Sometimes, I can't rely too much on someone who actually bought their hardwares because no matter what, they will try to defend their purchase no matter how bad it is. This is contrary to people who are receiving their hardwares for free for benchmarking such as Techpowerup and so on. Its basically the same as people who own FX-8350 and saying its equal to or better than i5-3570K in gaming just because they're trying to defend their purchase. I don't have any bad feeling with you and I'm not a rich guy either to buy expensive gaming rig. All of the things that I said is purely based on my research and the majority of benchmark. Majority usually wins. Sorry for taking so long to write this reply because I'm struggling with my English.

Because majority of the reviewers dont use profiles or even troubleshoot. Rarely you found a good sli/cf review let alone 4 gpu review.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-hd7990-quadfirex-review/

And they dont even force profiles
