Trying to build an AMD computer on a budget - Page 2

I think the first question that should have been asked is what do you plan to use this machine for? the GPU is a dead indication for gaming, but it's good to know. Once that has been communicated, then we can go about looking at your build. No sense building you a Ferrari when all you need is a Honda.

I also bought a Phanteks cooler to make sure I could keep it cool. It's really quite horrible trying to get it above 4 GHz. It's unstable at 4.2 with a core voltage of 1.45, and I can't get the voltage much higher without heating it up too much during stability testing. I've also read that for every-day usage, voltage should stay below 1.45 for the FX series? Is that true or no? I definitely regret not spending the little extra to get the 8350.

OP, it's completely up to you though. It depends how valuable overclocking is to you. The 8320 still performs fine for everything, including gaming.

More info on your build please. My 8320 can hit 4.1 without even touching the voltage. Somethings amiss here.

Sure.

FX 8320
Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 (everyone in this thread is hating, but I think it's ok)
Seasonic Gold 750 W PSU
HD 7970 Ghz
Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB
Corsair 300r case
3 Noctua P12 PWM fans on Phanteks TCP14
dvd drive, sound card, etc

I tried following a guide for FX 8150/8120 for Gigabyte motherboards here on OCN, but i just couldn't really get anywhere, nothing was stable. The lowest I tried was 4.2 at 1.45, and then I just gave up. I haven't spent a huge amount of time on it, since I've been busy since building the rig a couple of weeks ago. I have checked stability at stock though, and it is, so I can't RMA.

It'll boot into windows at much higher frequency or lower voltage, but Prime95 fails within a couple of minutes no matter what I do. And yes, I've read about Prime95 being ridiculous for FX series, but I'm of the opinion that ALL programs should be completely stable for a good OC. I would appreciate some tips for sure! I was going to post in the FX owners club this weekend for help. I think I just have an awful chip.

Sorry to derail thread, OP. I think your proposed build looks quite good. HD 7950 or 7870 might be better bang for buck than 660. Especially with the free games offered.

Edit. mention case and fans.

Not hating at all. If you have a good one it's a great board. I'd just hate for someone to have problems like those in the gigabyte 990fxa club have been all because they tried to save $30. Just the improved heatsinks on the 990fxa-ud5 are worth the extra money.

That Asrock board does fine even with an 8 core, but it kicks into overdraw protection at 175w with the FX 8 core, so you can't clock it too high. It's a pretty rugged board for a 4+1 phase.

They aren't binned any lower at all, this was confirmed by AnandTech when PD was first released. You would be the only 83xx owner I heard of who can't hit at least 4.6Ghz. wink.gif It's kinda like Phenom II where all the overclockers bought the 955 and ran them at 4Ghz+...

The FX club guys over at G3D all have at least 4.5Ghz OC.... Me thinks you may need some help overclocking that chip? smile.gif

Btw 1.55v is safe max for FX same as Phenom II.....

Not hating. Just look in the Gigabyte 990FX owners club. It's plagued with problems.
