New GPU - Prices Vs Improvement...

looking online and seeing graphics cards being sold now for nearly £1000!!!!!!
(And thinking.....***?!!??!?!?)

anyway....i have (what prob seems old tech now)....an ATI 3870x2...
Got it in 2005(ish) and its still working and doing a job tbh!

But...
What sort of money we looking at to replace this with a more advanced/faster/better card to get the current card from a windows rating of 5.3...into the 6.5's-7.0's? Very curious if a current £50 card will demolish a card made 8 years ago?

Cheers

Ignore WEI. Its a completely rubbish benchmark. Id get a 7850. Cost is around $170-$200 depending on brand and is a substantial increase in performance.

That's the 6770 in the charts, which is almost twice as fast as the 6670.

Best bang-for-the-buck is the 7770 or if you have more cash the 650Ti boost.

However, you might find a used 7870 or a 660 used for a bit more cash but gives a big performance jump over the above mentioned cards.

If you can go for the 7790 (don't know if it would fit the budget), then I would safely say yes.

Keeping in mind that your 3870X2 was a high-end beast with dual GPUs, it might perform slightly better in older DX9 games depending on the title.

But in newer games, the 7770/90 might pull ahead (in DX9). And they support DX11. & consume less power.

The budget is £000 atm...lol
Just purchased a new MB, memory, CPU and heatsink...
next obvious thing to do would be the GPU....

that was £200-250 for the 3870x2 when i got it...and has lasted till now...
but...still produces some nice Dx10 graphics in WiC & company of hero's quite nicely...
And recently started playing Star Trek online as well....on reduced settings tho, but still goes along not to bad...

i wouldn't be wanting to spend that on a GPU again tbh...other things to spend cash on these days unfortunately... mad.gif
So...anything between a 7770 to 7850 would be better than what i have then?

Always the pre-owned section could go down....
