The press kit we were shown also contained details of some very impressive mid range laptops (i5 + 740m) in the ~$700 region.

Sigh, I feared something like that would happen.. :s I have a bulky $1500 gaming laptop right now, would've been amazing to switch in a year or so to a new one with better specs, and a much slimmer design. This one works great for everything, except portability.. So when I have to use it for something other than gaming, it's not too practical. Hopefully if it sticks closer to the $2000 mark rather than the $4000 mark I might pick one up.

Impressive, but 1: too expensive and 2: gaming laptops don't "last" long enough and don't give us enough breathing room for future upgrades. Bring us a laptop with more reasonably swappable components and I can guarantee the laptop industry will recover a bit and see more adoption by enthusiasts (by enthusiasts I mean gamers and whatnot).

In order to have swappable components that would mean two things t the manufacturer. You forgo having a thin package to make room for a swappable component and that you are now introducing a large cause of user error that could increase RMAs. Unless they state that if something happens to the laptop after a part has been replaced that you are sol.

nice basically upgraded version of my ultrabook. I have the u2442 with Ivy, GTX670M, SSD and 8GB memory. Its so sweet I can even play BFBC2 on it online, the only thing though is I wish it had better graphics like this one has. They said this uses the same chassis, so your memory and SSD/HDD can be swapped, but this prob will have a DVD-ROM, unlike mine which actually kind of sucks that I don't get to read DVDs. Hopefully they improved the battery life as well.

They also added a sub! that is sick, that was really needed.

BTW laptop market isn't sucking, not many people only have a tablet and a phone.
