Ended up flashing to a 7970 Bios, a HIS GHZ one. Worked perfectly. moved it from the stock 7970 1.17 V (Boost is 1.25V), to 1V, and its running solidly. Went from 86 degrees @1.25V at 80% fan speed, to 74 degrees @ 45% fan speed. So 12 degree temp difference and a 35% fan speed difference. Would get more comparable results if I ran the 7970 Bios card at 80% fan speed to get realistic results. very happy right now. Had remorse when I was running it at 86 degrees, now happy at a quiet 74 degrees.
Any future people who stumble across this thread (I was stumbling across google and I got upset at the lack of results, so this should popup for people looking for the same thing)
I used the bios from TechPowerUp, the 7970 Bios, with 1050/1400, and I just undervolted and underclocked from there to 1V and 925/1250.
