If we hack the locked bios or use something like racerx on it, it works in the same way as a reference card would.

Its evident there is some use merely my observing GHz users boosting graphs. Now, remember when the GHz came out, amd explained a new tdp calculation they used to determine the boosting state of the card. If I had to guess, these power limit % changes are directly affecting the outcome of these calculations and allowing a more lax boosting effect.

and that is why i hacked my bios !~

Actually, you do have to physically mod the card to bypass OCP. You know what OCP stands for right?

That deserved a facepalm. A stock card will throttle w/o any overclock in benchmarks. What do you think happens when you add the +20? It no longer throttles and scores higher. Just by raising the +20, the card drew more power. You know what this proves ya? Just raising that option a card drew more power, who would have thought that possible? And in case ya didn't know, I was at almost 1400mhz core and well over 1.35v. Guess what happens when I give it 1.38v regardless of the +50 setting?

Btw you know there's a thread on the +50 a few threads down right. Go check it out. wink.gif

Taking a look at the throttling from 7970boost 20% vs 50%, it is evident that the higher power tune does something. As I said in my post, it may just be affecting the tdp formula used by the drivers to calculate when it needs to throttle. So it doesnt necessarily actually get throttled from hitting 300w, but just the assumption by the formula that it will hit 300w.

I will look for the old article on it, but AMD did redo their tdp formula for the boost cards (for obvious reasons). Does this affect reference/non boost cards? I dunno. But I would for sure say it is doing something beyond nothing at all.
