Overclocking/Cooling 3930k

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just recently completed my high performance gaming PC and am now looking into overclocking and getting everything stable, etc.. and I need help.

I have never done this before, so I'm a complete noob at it, and I got several questions, and am looking for the best advice I can possibly get from any and everyone.

After some good research I've seen that these chips (3930k) can acquire some pretty high and stable overclocks (4.6-5.0ghz) and I'm wanting to do this myself, if I can figure out how. I'm not quite sure of everything, or if I'm doing it right, but at this moment, I have came across this current video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdypzNu4He0

I have copied his bios by manually entering everything I could tell that I had different, and I'm wanting to know what I could do, or if I did everything right and should leave it as is..

My specs are as follows:

CPU: 3930k
GPU: 2-WAY SLI Titans
MB: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
RAM: 32 GB 1600 CAS 7 Gskill Memory

Right now from copying his bios I have it running at 4.7ghz, at 1.392 Core Voltage.
I ran intel burn master on the highest setting and it said that I passed.
I also ran prime 95, and it passed.

My current temps are around 40-45 stock, and was ranging anywhere from 70-78 on full load when running these temps. I'm not sure if these are safe, if I should keep what I got, or approach another route.. being that I'm completely new at this I could use all the advice I can get.

For cooling I'm using custom water cooling, 2 separate loops. The loop cooling the CPU/MB is a modded h80i radiator with push/pull fans.

For the gpus I got a 240 radiator. I haven't overclocked the titans yet, but I want to as soon as I finish and find out what I should do with my current CPU situation.

I have some pretty crappy 1500 RPM fans I'm using on the radiators, but I just ordered some of the corsair high edition 2350 rpm fans, and will be using those as soon as I get them.

Look forward to some advice/help.

Thanks guys.

Those temps seem pretty safe to me. If you are hitting 70-78 degrees when running prime 95 you are well inside the recommended temperature that intel say you should stay under for temperatures. Plus you will never be using that much cpu power when gaming or doing anything really so you are safe I think.

Intel Specs on 3930K:
TCASE = 66.8°C (stated as maximum temperature at IHS before damage risk)

You've never done video encoding, or any kind of rendering have you?

Temps don't mean a lot if you don't tell us what your ambient temp is, but with 40C idle temp, you might try doing a remount if your ambient is 24 C ish.

Tcase isn't the maximum CPU core temperature. Nothing wrong w/ core temps of 80C. My 3930k sits @ 75C 24/7 w/ no issue.

I am only doing streaming and hardcore gaming/multitasking. nothing really else.

my ambient temperature is around 21 to 23 degrees celsius

You might want to try a remount with a proper surface clean and good TIM then, having your idle temp 20C above ambient seems a bit much to me.

I never said it was. Tcase is maximum safe IHS temperature before you risk damage. That would probably make the max core temp somewhere around 5-8C higher. Just because it's risky does not mean that people do not do it. The effects of running too hot are not immediate anyway, it's a slow degradation over time.

I've ran every one of my Core i7's between 70 - 80C 24/7 for folding@home. Never had a chip degrade or die. You should be worrying about voltage a lot more than temperatures.

well re mounting and allow of that is kind of out of the question at this point. Im hoping the introduction of the corsair fans will lower the temps a bit. I do know that a good TIM was applied before mounting tho. dunno what the other cases may be.. cause the h80i rad isnt enough to cool the mb/cpu? idk..

That voltage is rather high for that overclock.... I have mine at 4.87GHz with 1.3425V VCORE, 1.175v VTT+VCCSA, 1.80126v PLL, and LLC on "High" (pretty much no droop or overvoltage), and that's with the memory running at 2248 9-10-10-27 1T with 1.660v VDIMM.

I would recommend trying to get extra speed via the (actual) BCLK, as these chips can typically handle anywhere from 94-110MHz before running into issues, but I'd say no more than 108 without serious cooling (chilled/phase/LN2). Doing this, I went from 4.7GHz to where I'm at now, and actually was able to DROP a few voltages! You also get the benefit of faster memory.

But first, I would really try to get the vCORE down as you shouldn't need so much...
