GPU for Bling rig.

Thread Starter
Hey all, yet again i am asking about GPU's rolleyes.gif

Anyway, with the recent launch of GTX 780, prices are falling on top end 600 series GPU's, and my 480 is still kicking along great, but at 2560x1440, it shows it's ugly age tongue.gif

So... at the current moment, i cannot afford anything as i have a lot of other stuff to sort out at home.

My question is about the 670 and 680.

Now i heard the GTX 770 will be a rebadged 680? is this true?

Also, if i go with a 600 series, it will be between these 2 below.

680
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-evga-geforce-gtx-680-ftw

670
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-evga-gtx-670-ftw-signature-ii-28nm-pcie-30-(x16)-6208mhz-gddr5-gpu-1006mhz-cores-1344-dp-dvi-hdm

or the MSI GeForce GTX 670 Power Edition OC 2GB (currently not in stock on SCAN)

This is all for future plans though, i would just like a bit of know how in regards to performance differences from 670/680 and the 770 (speculation)

Cheers all thumb.gif

Yes 770 will be a rebadged 680, check out this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1394792/vc-official-nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-performance

If you are strapped for cash I would go with a 670. The performance gain from a 680 isn't worth it imho. 770 will outperform 680 by a few percents because of its overclock and higher memory speeds but will probably be more expensive than a 680 now.

The release of 770 might drive secondhand prices of 670 and 680 down though. Why are you looking at the EVGA cards only? The only color scheme that fits your build tongue.gif?

Edit: this is the 670 version of the evga reference cooler you had selected on the 680, why not go for this? 30 pounds cheaper! http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-evga-gtx-670-28nm-pcie-30-(x16)-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-915mhz-boost-980mhz-cores-1344-2x-dl-dvi-dp-hd

I have always had great chips from EVGA, plus i gain the warranty smile.gif

Feel free to stray my mind with other models though biggrin.gif

Cheers for the link mate, i will check it out thumb.gif

EDIT, yeah i saw it, but i though the 2 fans would do better consider i do overclock....

And i am staying under 400 pounds i have decided for my next 1440p pusher smile.gif

I'm 100% sure that EVGA will release a GTX 770 version. I'll bet my 7870 XT on it lol. As stated above, the GTX 770 is just a rebranded GTX 680 with a few more frames. Check out this LINK for further information. If the price is right, pick em up!

If your honestly strapped for cash, pick up another GTX 480 and SLI em. They can be found on ebay for about $200.

I did 480 SLi once, i will not do it again... the pro's are outweighed by the cons sadly.

Certain games were royally broken (frame times etc) and the heat build up was pretty astronomical, even with huge heatsinks.

It is fine if you have a larger room to place your PC in, but i sadly do not unless i move it all downstairs, which i won't be, as that is my living space wink.gif

EDIT for bad English use biggrin.gif

SLI 480 will use a lot of power though! I would go with a single new card which will perform better than SLI 480 while consuming less power, making less noise and output less heat.

Well then why did you select a reference cooler on the 680 which is hotter than a 670 which would benefit more from dual fans tongue.gif ? If you care about noise definitely go dual fan. Overclocking difference will be small, you'll clock the same speeds but run hotter while doing it which may cause the fans to spin faster thus produce more noise.

Models I'd be looking at for 670 : Asus dc2, msi PE, msi twin frozr, gigabyte windforce.

But if price on the 770 is good, pick that up. Wait it out for another week.

Yes, it really does.. especially with overclocks!

And yes, good advice waiting for 770.

Anyone know from experience how 670's do at 1440p?

No, I used to have a asus dc2 670 and really loved it. Used it with a 1080p screen resolution and could crank metro 2033, far cry 3 and bf 3 to the max with 40- 80 fps depending on game and what's happening on the screen. 1440p will make this numbers drop with 10 fps maybe? Check out some benchmarks. Google is your friend.

This would be my pick, but obviously I am biased because I owned the card. But was very pleased with it. Best cooler, period. It doesn't get better than this on noise levels or you'd have to go water.

Ok, i will quote Toms Hardware for my Benchmarks.

Temps with OC's

Sound levels.

Crysis 2 1080p test between those cards.

For off the bat performance, the Zotac AMP! is in the lead, for cooling and noise, the ASUS DCII is beasting it.

I do have a video of my 480 at 1080p in Crysis at max settings to compare (850mhz)

Even at 1080p, that is quite the increase in performance :O

Currently, i get by at 1440p not enabling AA in newer titles, (2xMSAA is acceptable on BF3 single player)
