[Yahoo!] Chinese hackers breach key US weapons designs - Page 4

trade war hurts both of us more than having the least secret of our secrets stolen from us. counter-intuitively, not every working and middle class person will benefit from bringing back all of our manufacturing so that a few hundred thousand factory workers can benefit while the rest of the 300 million americans pay several times more for a product. we sure as hell aren't going to export them because they are not competitively priced against chinese goods. where are all these goods from germany, canada, UK or any other nation with high labor costs? not too many. not all of us have the privilege of disposable income to offset the potential increase in the price of goods and maintain our current living standards. and that is only speaking of the wealthy, developed nations such as ourselves. what about poorer nations? you think those people care if its american made if the china made is just as good for their purposes and costs half as much?

yea, ending trade and outsourcing to china is a very "obvious" answer but very few educated in mainstream economics have vouched for this idea. people have studied this idea over and over again so much that it ends up in your standard macroecon textbook (if you own one). besides, it wont do much good to end outsourcing right now. the chinese already have the factories, technical knowledge, and capital established to produce these same goods we buy without the quality american name brand slapped on the box. so it isn't going to do anyone except the chinese any good if nations with high labor costs pull out right now to make our own stuff that is will cost more to produce locally while the chinese can make these same goods of comparable quality for much cheaper and export them to other nations for fractions of the price of a locally produced good.

can we go back to discussing the defense aspects of this news rather than use this red herring talk of trade?

The USA is probably giving as good as they are getting when it comes to hacking. We just don't hear about what we're doing to the Chinese due to their media being far more secretive. Nobody seriously believes this is all one sided, right?

However, I'm fairly sure that the really important stuff is actually well-protected, i.e., not even connected to the Internet in the first place. Places like Los Alamos National Laboratory use quantum encryption. If this was something truly important they would've breached, I think we wouldn't even get to know it.

Human error is the only way for this stuff to leak. These are closed networks. There are tons of internet facing information servers but that is usually current or older technology. wink.gif
The only people that know about that stuff are the people that know biggrin.gif

I would love if the US was trolling China, and let them steal a file named "Top-Secret-For-Your-Eyes-Only", but was actually a renamed M1 or Howitzer design.

last i heard, the only weapon they have produced recently with some originality and cause for concern is a missile that destroys carriers.

Or maybe they stole the key design components of new Chinese weapons systems!

IDK what all the fuss was about, they didn't get anything that was actually important...

All important gov't information is kept offline...If you couldn't figure that out by now, I'd strongly suggest looking into it...
